I never thought Em murdered Jay on Renegades.  I enjoyed both of them but I thought Jay was better.  He painted a picture of the struggle,

Quote
I had to hustle, my back to the wall, ashy knuckles
Pockets filled with a lot of lint, not a cent
Got to vent, lot of innocent of lives lost on the project bench
What you hollering? Got to pay rent, bring dollars in
By the bodega, iron under my coat, feeling braver
Doo-rag wrapping my waves up, pockets full of hope
Do not step to me - I'm awkward, I box lefty often
My pops left me an orphan, my momma wasn't home
Could not stress to me I wasn't grown; 'specially on nights
I brought something home to quiet the stomach rumblings
My demeanor - thirty years my senior
My childhood didn't mean much, only raisin green up
Raisin my fingers to critics; raisin my head to the sky
Big I did it - multi before I die (nigga)
No lie, just know I chose my own fate
I drove by the fork in the road and went straight

I don't understand how you can say Jay got killed when he spit this verse.  That's real shit.  Em verse was hell of dope but he just talked about the relationship of people, his art work, and himself.  Jay's verse can apply to a lot of down trodden people.
Cool breeze; I'm hopping out of new Beams
My outfit ran me a few G's but none of that will matter if you leave
I used to be an Adam with two Eves and shawtys automatically do me
Excuse me, all that happened before you doesn't matter
I'm a vision of the future climbing the success ladder
Recline, in the mean time, twenty three shine, diamond bling blind as I rewind
- Banks

I think a lot of it was because of the unusual flow jay used on it
See these fans can't resist the rush,
they Wu-Tang for life
Scarred for life,
they can't forget the cuts
