An Akon interview with AP, speaking on Lady Gaga's success and how it is leaking into the hip-hop world:

"That's what excited me about it. You got some straight hard hip-hop guys about to move into the dance realm. That's shocking when you got someone like Dr. Dre about to do a dance record."

"It actually sounds great. He played it for me, I was shocked. So I was like 'Wow, that's dope!' When the world hears this they might go crazy!"

Does this mean Detox as a whole is a dance record? Does it mean the first single is a dance record? Or is Akon just referring to a song Dre did with Lady Gaga unrelated to Detox?

Sometimes "record" refers to just one song, not an entire album.

I don't see why people are so surprised, like they forgot Dre did California Love, or even a few Gwen Stefani joints that are as far from hardcore hip-hop as you could imagine.

Exactly, look at Mary J's "Family Affair", 50's "In Da Club"...dance records. As long as the beat bangs, it should be fine.

Pop isn't necessarily "Dance" music. As you said "Pop" is "Popular Music", but "Dance" is a genre as well.

I'm thinking by Dance, he's referring to electro sounding music at around 120 BPM... at least that's my interpretation.
