Pick It Up, Arizona, One Piece at a Time!!!!

This is a genius idea, in it's simplicity.  We should all get stuff like this going in every city in america.  I got a special type of love for elderly people who still make something of themselves, even if they can't do what the rest of us can.

City rewards hard-working elderly, disabled

By Ainslee S. Wittig/Arizona Range News

The City of Willcox wants to clean up its act.

A new beautification campaign, "Pick it up, Willcox!! Neighbor by neighbor," began last month with a community clean-up day, including a free county dump day. Numerous groups participated in picking up trash throughout the city, and individuals cleaned up their own yards - getting rid of more than 40 tons of trash and junk without a fee at the Country Transfer Station.

At the end of September, a program to recognize those who are elderly or disabled, but continue to do their own yard work, was started by Code Enforcement Officer Laurie Armstrong.

The first recipient of the House of the Month award was Vee Sanchez, 87 for her home on Henry Street. She received a plaque for her efforts.

Each month, a new house/yard will be chosen by the code enforcement office which upholds the standards the city would like all residents to maintain: homes and yards which are pleasing to look at.

"We would like to remind the elderly, shut-ins and physically disabled that, although we recognize those who are able to clean their yards themselves, we don't expect that everyone can do that. We'd like anyone who needs help to contact the Willcox Department of Public Safety at 384-4673. We can help with yards, maintenance and clean-up if needed," Armstrong said.

A second program Code Enforcement has just started is the Adopt-a-House program.

Volunteers are sent to houses in need of yard work, maintenance or clean-up (such as to those homes whose owners have contacted the police department for help).

Armstrong said the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Willcox is sending out 14 volunteers on one Saturday each month to do yard cleanup for someone who is not able to do the work by him or herself.

"The LDS Church has really stepped up to the plate here. We really appreciate that. They have committed to help for a year, and they'll be starting Oct. 26 with the first home," she said.

"We'd really like the help of more organizations or individuals. We've had some organizations who've stepped up to help, but they are mostly young kids. We really need some adults - people who don't need someone to guide them. We can also use individuals - we're not limited to organizations. I'll even need a volunteer to help with the volunteers," Armstrong said.

Armstrong said she'd like to thank the Willcox Public Works Department and the Department of Public Safety for their work all year long.

She added that the city will have more clean-up days, and that the "Pick it up, Willcox," campaign will "really hit the ground in the next month."

Organizations, schools or civic groups that would like Armstrong to give a presentation on the goals of the beautification campaign and its programs, may contact her at the number listed above.

I think it's cool, too, that most of the volunteers for the second program, were kids.  I sincerely believe kids are closer to god in that they aren't jaded by the world yet... so they naturally want to help.
