I think real stems from the fact that hip hop music in general used to mean something, it had some intelligence in it, poeticism, or likewise it carried a message, it was multi faceted, there was a sense of an identity of what it was. Now in this present day and age, it has become extremely diluted, extremely formulaic, intelligence seems to be something of a taboo and it's just on the whole, deeply dumbed down, garbage about money, jewellery, excess violence and women. Now i have nothing against using whichever subject people want to use, but there is a huge chasm where creativity should lie.

Not really. Any "era" of hip hop you look at was dominated by a particular type of music, and not one of them were really more meaningful or intelligent than the others. The entire genre began as party music at block parties for crying out loud. Lyrical substance was an afterthought and has never taken over the mainstream.

I never said it was mainstream, I simply said that it used to have more variety and consequently there was more depth, there was a competitive edge to it, each rapper was trying to out rap the other, as well as the party music but that has now taken a back seat and you can hear it as you take the back catalogues of said artist, it's usually a very quick spiral downwards in terms of lyricism.

I assumed you were speaking on the mainstream, because the underground has always thrived. As a matter of fact I would say the underground has more depth now than it did during say the 90s. Either way what you were saying doesn't make sense. Hip hop as a whole isn't less meaningful than it was 20 years ago, if anything its more meaningful since now underground artists have a better platform to express themselves (the internet), and lyricism as a whole has improved.

i swear i hear this shit alot on forums and i find the shit funny alot of times, it's like the definition most give is when they like a song it's REAL!!!! what makes a joe budden or a talib more real then a 50 cent and z-ro? please can someone explain this yell

What those guys usually mean when they say its "real hip hop" is "this sounds like Early-Mid 90s Eastcoast Boom Bap",people somehow have that idead that Hip Hop started and ended in the 90s so everything that sounds like 90s and i mean EastCoast 90s is soooo real...but the reality is that Waka and Soulja boy and those dudes are doing realer Hip Hop then all those Boom Bap guys cause in the beginning Hip Hop was electro party music, and thats what it is today (mixed with some rnb).

this is a good thread BOX5. when i saw the subject, i immediately thought 'real' is when you stay true to yourself and your beliefs, and show it lyrically. but these points about the early days of hip hop got me thinking again

You ain't wanna dance ever?  Mainstream hip-hop is real hip-hop too.  Artists feel happy and wanna dance sometimes too.  It ain't their fault thats the kinda vibe the fans eat up.

and i guess throw that d is not real hip hop too? since it was about a dance, even tho it had more and better scratching then alot of these so called "real hip hop" songs, and artist like epmd was sellouts for doing "the steve martin", biz sold out for doing a couple of biz dances and the mudfoot, why people just can't say all this shit is hip hop,but it's a certain sound that entertains you more, i don't like william roberts but that man is hip hop,i was mad at krsone bacc in the day for dissing my favorite mc shan but i still give him credit for being the number 1 hip hop artist, vanilla ice succ'd but he did hip hop,he was just marketed to the people he resembled and he wasn't that good at it,i liked alot of mc hammer joints and still will bump them bitches, but do i think he was a dope mc, no, but he is hip hop yell

yea a rapper and mc is different, but them cats is doing hip hop,it might succ but it's apart of hip hop, but me i love to see a rapper/mc do all styles if that's who he is as a person, take my self for instance, i grew up in this shit on 2 live crew,mc hammer, nwa,mc shan, mantronix, bizzy bee, snap, cool rocc steady and some house music, heavy d,beastie boys,la dream team, rakim etc, all of that shaped me into the mc i became,so if i did damn near any style of rap song it wouldn't be a stretch for me,and it's alot of mc's/rappers out there like that, even some younger ones, we just all have styles that we like more yell

I do believe that there is such a thing as being real but I don't think it reflects on the quality of the music.  It just reflects on the listener caring if the music factual or not.  For example, Rick Ross is not real but it doesn't matter because most people like his music.  Yet, to me, Reks is real and I still like his music.   It indirectly affects the music whether or not the audience appreciates an honest perspective.
