That's what propably happened. I hope the whole album won't be full of shit like this.

Yea I don't get why tho... he got a grammy last year.  Maybe he feels he's not with the times re: pop-rap so he got a hired gun to help him out.  Didn't this guy do the Em/Rihanna song too (which was huge)?
They know the hardcores will get it regardless so I guess they're tryign to get the youngins to buy it too with this new track.

I agree with this part ... the guy prolly has 1000s of beats made and for the first single he goes with someone else ... even a so so beat at that.  Somethings not right.  If he was rapping on an album to someone elses beat fine but his own..  ???

Dude that album was mainstream to the fullest. I remember being a kid in middle school when that album came out. The songs were all over the radio and everyone in my age group was loving it. I thought it was the most awesome album I had ever heard.

So is that the criteria for a mainstream album? "People loving it & being on the radio"?

Is every album that everyone loves mainstream?

If you disagree then what would make 2001 not mainstream? Banging beats, catchy hooks, simple lyrics, Isn't that enough? What I liked about 2001 was that almost every song on there could have been a hit.

Is there a link to the real/official mastered version or are we all bitching about the unfinished still?  I checked YouTube and the track they had did not sound radio quality aka polished/mastered version...

You can clearly hear the song from the version that has leaked. It's not gonna get any better.

Yea it would be a good track for Recovery or Relapse but for Detox a bit dissappointing ....

With that hook tho--which is catchy and memorable--it will do well.  That's the only part of the song I really remember.  I think this will do good on the charts though.

I think you're all forgetting that "mainstream" in 1999 is NOT even CLOSE to mainstream of 2011. Back then, it could have been the most gangsta song ever made, but could still be a mainstream song (which didn't necessarily mean that mainstream was bad, in fact people only started hating mainstream rap these past 6 or 7 years). Now in 2011, it doesn't matter who is making the song, or what it sounds like, all that matters is the star power of the people on it, and the fact that it's made for little girls . . . which is why mainstream rap is indeed horseshit, and also why this song is trash. So don't compare mainstream rap now to mainstream rap then.

I mean, isn't that what you want from an album though? If you built your dream album wouldn't you want the best production & enjoyable hooks? I mean Dre wasn't lyrical on "The Chronic" either.

I always associate the term "mainstream" with "selling out" or not producing your best work for the public's sake. I guess it just comes down to your definition.

To everyone:

A mainstream album is one in which its creators anticipate it's going to sell a lot of records -- that could be the artists involved and/or the label backing the project.

I agree that 2001 was a hella mainstream album, as was The Chronic to a certain extent.  Straight Outta Compton was not.  "Mainstream" is an adjective that describes an album's business potential rather than its musical content.

This is why it's ok to say Dre has been a mainstream artist for over 20 years now, but he has not always been a mainstream artist.  Snoop has always been a mainstream artist.

"Detox" is a myth -- Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster, Area 51, Iraq having WMD, Detox...you get it now?  It was invented by the Aftermath marketing department to maintain the fans' attention.  Notice how everytime a new Aftermath album is ready to come out, they always mention Detox is next up?  Because they are using the invention of "Detox" as a way to market other albums.  The sooner you realize that Detox is NOT REAL, the sooner you'll feel liberated.  Oh yeah, f.u. Aftermath for fooling us fans.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mainstream

Mainstream is, generally, the common current thought of the majority. However, the mainstream is far from cohesive; rather the concept is often considered a cultural construct[citation needed]. It is a term most often applied in the arts[citation needed] (i.e., music, literature, and performance). This includes:

something that is available to the general public;
something that has ties to corporate or commercial entities.

As such, the mainstream includes all popular culture, typically disseminated by mass media. The opposite of the mainstream are subcultures, countercultures, cult followings, and (in fiction) genre. Additionally, mainstream is sometimes a codeword used for an actual ethnocentric or hegemonic subculture point of view, especially when delivered in a culture war speech. It is often used as a pejorative term because hipsters look down upon those who know less about the intricacies of underground and garage bands than the vast majority of the population cares to know about. Pejorative actions towards mainstream members of the population are usually referred to as "Total Carrboro Moves" after a blog founded in Carrboro, North Carolina, a town that embodies hipster subculture. In the United States, mainline churches are sometimes referred to synonymously as "mainstream".
