bye bye freedom of speech
« on: January 07, 2003, 02:47:49 AM »
Quote
The University of California at San Diego has ordered a student organization to delete hyperlinks to an alleged terrorist Web site, citing the recently enacted USA Patriot Act.
School administrators have told the group, called the Che Cafe Collective, that linking to a site supporting the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) would not be permitted because it violated federal law.

In a letter to the Che Cafe Collective, UCSD University Centers Director Gary Ratcliff said the hyperlink violated a law that bans "providing material support to support terrorists." Ratcliff warned that the student organization would face disciplinary action if it did not immediately remove the link to FARC.

Why do you care so much about America?  Are we affecting your life?

I don't particularly love my country.  I'd like for us to sit down and reinvent ourselves.  But I also don't agree with other countries ways of governing.

The EU has lot of issues I could criticize.  But I realize my criticism is uninformed and relatively worthless.

This is the world we live in. Its really your choice.  Live in it as it is, or don't.  If you want to waste your time complaining then so be it, its really your choice.
There is the option to worry about your own life and take the world for what it is.  You can blame the world and complain, or you can say fuck it shit aint perfect but I'm gonna work with what we got.

What I really hate about the "change the world" campaigns or the "I wanna make a difference in the world" people.  Not that I'm refering to you.  But the I want to make a difference people have no idea what is the "right" difference to make.  The people that complain about how the world should be changed are the people with the smallest understanding about what changes would make the world definitely better.

Yes the world is imperfect. Yes the US is imperfect.  Yes you can criticize its not very hard.  But what are you accomplishing?  Are you improving your life?

No one on this board can voice their opinion on anything with DEFINITE CERTAINTY that they are right.  You all hold to subjective convictions, believing them to be absolute certainties.  You're complaining about issues you can't possibly even fully understand.

In order to make a difference or to voice an opinion worth anything you must be educated on the topic at hand, unbaised, and objective.  Very few people here are.

You want to make excuses like "america is affecting your life."  Well so fucking what its affecting my life too.  The terrorists are affecting my life too.  But I don't hate them or bitch about them being evil.  I take life for whats its worth and live the best I can.

I followed a couple of links in this report and got to the moby loving vegan groups press report, and it is a crock of shit. Here are a couple of examples

"From its beginning it was involved in UCSD campus politics and has been a space for leftist activists and students questioning the authority of UCSD administration" - If you don't like how the uni. is being run then transfer somewhere else.

"we are on the brink of entering into an age of fascism to rival Nazi Germany"
- I think they're exaggerating slightly, don't you

"If it claims itself to be a democracy, the U.S. should promote access to information because it is this information that enables the public to make better decisions." - Even if the information is anti-american terrorism?

"America's TERRORIST war on the world's people" - If they don't like america why are they living there? and acting as a drain on the education system, or are they trying to bring it down from within?

Never surrender

meanwhile back in germany:
Anti-censorship groups say freedom of speech is at stake

A German man could be jailed for three years over a comment posted on the internet, in which prosecutors say he belittled the events of 11 September.
Holger Voss

In a case which critics say has major implications for freedom of speech on the internet, Holger Voss stands accused of "glorification of a criminal act".

Mr Voss, who will appear in court in the western German town of Muenster on Wednesday, insists his comments were meant to be sarcastic.

He had written a final sentence at the foot of his remarks - posted last summer on the Telepolis message board - which he says indicates that the sentiments expressed were not to be taken seriously.

"The court will decide whether he did indeed mean them ironically, and if so, whether or not that makes any difference," court spokesman Juergen Wrobel told BBC News Online.

Anonymous tip-off

The apparently offending remarks were made in response to a message posted by another internet user - Engine_of_Aggression - who appeared to be pleased about the alleged murders of thousands of Taleban fighters by local militias during the downfall of the Afghan regime in 2001.

"Congratulations to the people, who in this over-critical time, dare to grab evil at its root and eradicate it from the face of the earth!" wrote Engine_of_Aggression.

Mr Voss, who describes himself as an anti-militarist, responded:

"Yes, Congratulations to the murderers of 11.09.02.... Good, that on 11.09 a couple of real men (!) found the courage to show the evil ones, the USA how it really is!"

An anonymous complaint to the police led to the prosecution under a German law which forbids the glorification of a criminal act.

In a statement posted on the anti-censorship site Stop24, Mr Voss insists he was attempting to display the hypocrisy in valuing American lives over others.

The suit has also sparked controversy as the prosecution forced the owner of the discussion board to hand over details about Mr Voss.

dumbasses you are missing the point entirely.

read this line

"would not be permitted because it violated federal law."

yes. the college can say "we dont want this on our server". for which students would moan about freedom of speech being oppressed... but.... for it to actually be removed because its illegal its a whole other thing.

I agree Overseer is a USA hater but he does have a point.

Their not lettin them run their site because it's anti-USA. But We're supposed to have freedom of speech here so it shouldn't be wrong to be anti-USA.

But then again, we can't really say anything because we dont know what was on that site. Look at tha law they're breaking, It says their SUPPORTING TERRORIST, by SUPPLYING MATERIAL... So it's not like they're in trouble just because they AGREE with tha terrrorist, but they're actually HELPING the terrorist... and that's what's wrong.... Especially in these times.

Thats krazy shit, but I guess thats the way the world is going these days.

That was an interesting topic by Engle-wood. While I don't agree with the germans comments about 9/11, there is no reason he should be prosecuted for it. If a pro israeli message board user for example said, at last the brave israelis got rid of sum evil palestinians, i wonder if there's b e the same issue. Both are terrorism, and both are sick comments, but freedom of speech should come above all that.

Ant talked about not complaining and just putting ur head down and keep going. But it was one of ur great presidents that said, all it takes for evil to prevail is the good man to remain silent. I think thats a good quote. If those in power dont feel they have to answer to anyone we are all seriously fucked. For example here, corruption has been blown open in the last few years. We could say fuck it, noones perfect, and left them to get rich, but no, people lobbyed, good men led the fight and dozens have been named and shamed sum even face jail sentences. I think people who have it relatively good have an obligation to put up the good fight and fight for those who cant fight themselves; the poor, the third world...our future generations...
SO MANY PEOPLE THINK THEY KNOW
BUT DO THEY KNOW TO THINK
THINK ABOUT THINKING
BEFORE THEY KNOW NOTHING
DID THEY KNOW SOMETHING
LETS THINK
