If it was so great, then why does Eminem say himself that it was wack?

because he was in a bad place when alot of that music was created and he was taking alot of flack for the accents...

he was just beginning the recovery process...it was a dark album.

the sequencing and the choice of singles are the only thing missing from that album.

i don't think it was trash, i just think it was mediocre compared to his classic material, and a huge letdown for an album exclusively produced by dre

at the end of the day it excites me that he released two so damn different albums over such a short period of time.. relapse and recovery are nothing alike, show me a rapper who brought out two completely different albums during a span of about a year...
however it pisses me off that he didn't release most of the tracks he did when he was completely fucked up, cause i thought my darling, careful what you wish for and beautiful were all superdope
Cause I don't care where I belong no more
What we share or not I will ignore
And I won't waste my time fitting in
Cause I don't think contrast is a sin
No, it's not a sin

If it was so great, then why does Eminem say himself that it was wack?

He said it so some of his ''fans'' would buy the album (those besides the wiggers and teen girls who would buy it anyways, especially after watching the ''Love The Way You Lie'' video).

You have to analyze art independently from the artist's own opinion. Just because an artist says his shit is good/bad doesn't make it good/bad.

Recovery had some very good beats and subject matter, unfortunately it felt ''artificial'' and forced. The most adequate word to describe the album would be corny, on all aspects. Also, there was too much yelling which was even more unbearable because of the corniness it was coupled with.

Relapse was uniform, yet very diverse. It had a cohesive sound because the production was handled by just one producer, but it also had creative songs like My Darling and 3am, incredible storytelling and flow like Stay Wide Awake, motivational songs such as Beautiful and sad songs like Deja Vu. The mixing and overall beat selection was incredible too.
It is probably not a classic in the conventional sense of the word, or throughout music history...but during the last few years of our musical climate's utter wackness it was a breath of fresh air. An artist of his magnitude even releasing such an avant-garde project is something quite amazing.
