I think Method Man was one of the legends of 90's hip-hop that sometimes might get overlooked, because he's associated with being in a large and famous group- Wu-Tang.  But to me he was the superstar of Wu-Tang.  Old Dirty Bastard had star-quality but that came from being fucking crazy not from being a great artist, while Method Man had the whole package as a hip-hop emcee.

The only criticism I would have of Method Man, was that although he had a classic album as a group, 36 Chambers.  He failed to produce a classic album as a solo artist.   He had a couple of classic cuts as a solo artist with "All I Need" and "Bring The Pain", but him and Rza should of took more time and turned that shit into something on the level of an Illmatic or a Ready To Die.

Also notable, is that he was a part of two successful groups and successful as a solo artist, which not many artists can say that they went platinum in 3 different ways.  With Wu-Tang he went Platinum, solo he went platinum, and as a duo with Redman he went platinum.  And him and Red even had cuts like "Headbanger Boogie" that will go down as classics... so Meth has got to be remembered as one of the greats.

He had a deadline to meet on handing the album in and the original album that was gonna be released was lost in a flood. For the fact that Tical is still a pretty dope album when it was rushed is quite an achievement.

I mean, bring a part of Wu-Tang already puts him in the elite status.

Wouldn't find him in my top ten though.

Meth is great, but there's a lot of greats. And many of them are great based only on their solo work.

Wouldn't find him in my top ten

not sure about top 25...he's kinda a one trick pony.  granted he was great at what he did for over a decade before getting old.

I think Meth is a better rapper than he'll probably get credit for. Rap fans sort of have a "What Have You Done For Me Lately?" relationship with artists but while Method Man's solo discography might not be the best in his group, I'd say he was probably one of the best artists in there. As far as rap artists go, he's in the top percentile regardless of where y'all place him on your individual top 10's, 20's, or 50's.

na,
its not about "what have u done for me lately"
alota Wu-tang fans dig em, but hes not reputed otherwise (even tho hes from a legenderay rapfamily), unlike - say, Red

Meth is an entertainin indivual/character, actor n sometims as a 16bar-guestrapper, but as an mc - no, never packed a punch lyricaly or wit punchlines. (((threadstarter asked about hes position as an mc on our lists, rite?

plus, no rapper in hiphop-history has re-used as many verses or rhymes as Meth - thats a very big L

granted, its all bout subjectivity when it comes down to it tho
i personly think Meth can b very funny
