IE. Politicians use red herrings every time election rolls around. They'll get people to vote for them based on their positions on immigration or gay marriage instead of things they are actually going to do to affect this country.

human relations are based on manipulation, whether conscious or unconscious. and it starts in the cradle. anticipating somebody's reaction and adapting your approach to deal with that reaction is basic manipulation. when a toddler cries when you deny him/her a request (when (s)he does) that's because (s)he is hurt but also because (s)he has unconsciously developed from experience a sense that crying was the safest way for him/her to get what he wanted. your reaction to it will determine whether he'll change or not that strategy. that's how people become capricious and crybabies basically. we all expect something when it comes to dealing with other humans whether it's appreciation, love, consent, agreement, a discount, sex, sympathy, relief, anything really and manipulation is the medium through which we get what we really crave.

one of my friends had this book from Robert Cialdini, can't remember its name but it basically broke down how salesman and ads appealed to you and used psychological triggers to get you to buy what they were selling.
