WEEK IN PREVIEW:
50 CENT CASHES IN!

Get Rich or Die Tryin? Rages Past 750k, Could Reach 800k

 February 10, 2003

You can stab him, you can shoot him nine times, you can try to keep him down, but no one can deny that Queens rapper 50 Cent?s Shady/Aftermath/Interscope debut is a MONSTER.

Yes indeed, at a time when #1 albums have been moving little more than 100k per week, 50 Cent?s Get Rich or Die Tryin? is storming this week?s chart with upwards of eight times that amount, with early tallies of sales reports indicating that when everything is accounted for, the album will have sold at least 750k for the week, and possibly as much as 800k.

Despite reports of some stock problems, Interscope seems to have covered most gaps, and the project is headed for an enormous, Eminem-size chart debut.

Also debuting in the Top 10 will be the Evanescence-led Daredevil soundtrack (Wind-up), and the almost exclusively rack-driven Country artist Blake Shelton (Warner Bros.). Big gainers will include Kid Rock?s Cocky (Lava/Atlantic), exploding behind his smash duet with Sheryl Crow, and LL Cool J?s 10 (Def Jam/IDJ), also seeing huge gains following major action on his duet with Jennifer Lopez, "All I Have," which has been stripped onto the album.

At radio, our Top 40 brain surgeons tell us that, in addition to more action for 50 Cent?s "In Da Club," Lisa Marie Presley?s "Lights Out" (Capitol) will nab Most-Added honors, while Stacie Orrico?s "Struck" (Virgin), The Calling?s "For You" (also on Wind-up?s Daredevil soundtrack) and Cooler Kids? "Punk Debutante" (DreamWorks) will have good weeks.

At Crossover, it looks like Nas? "I Can" (Columbia) will come in Most Added, followed by Lil? Kim?s "The Jump-Off" (Queen Bee/Atlantic). Both have already seen heavy action, but are officially going for it this week. Also watch Baby?s "What Happened to That Boy," featuring Clipse, (Cash Money/Universal) and Freeway?s "All Right" featuring Allen Anthony (Def Jam/IDJ), both of which should have strong weeks.

And at PoMo/Rock, look for The Ataris? "In This Diary" (Columbia) to score the most adds, followed by Johnny Cash?s "Hurt," from his latest Rick Rubin-produced album (American/Lost Highway/IDJ).

Damn, thats pretty impressive. It took 'Pac's "Better Dayz" almost a month to reach 500, 000. Congrats to him.

I think that if you take one of the 'O's' out of 'Good' it's 'God', if you add a 'D' to 'Evil' it's the 'Devil'. I think some cool motherfucker sat down a long time ago and said 'let's figure out a way to control motherfuckers'.

Better Dayz sold 500,000 in two weeks, with about 390,000 in the first week.

Just to clear things up these are the official totals. From mtv.com
Therefore 50 cent did beat snoop's record sales.

Get Rich or Die Tryin' will be the top-selling album on next week's Billboard albums chart, moving in excess of 872,000 copies, according to SoundScan figures released Wednesday (February 12). With the tremendous total, the LP is the best-selling debut album since SoundScan started its tracking system in May 1991. Only Snoop Dogg's 1993 debut, Doggystyle, comes close, with more than 802,000 copies sold in its first week.
