An era ends in the desert and the Lakers finally get a real point guard. All in one surprise move.

The Phoenix Suns have reportedly agreed to sign-and-trade point guard Steve Nash to the Los Angeles Lakers for future draft picks, according to ESPN.com. Ken Berger of CBSSports.com has confirmed the details.

ESPN.com reports that Nash will receive a 3-year contract worth more than $25 million.

The Arizona Republic reports the Suns will receive the Lakers' first round picks in both 2013 and 2015 while also receiving second-round picks in 2013 and 2014.

The Lakers hold a $8.9 million trade exception created when they traded forward Lamar Odom to the Dallas Mavericks in December 2011. Nash presumably slides into that exception, Berger reports, allowing the Lakers to receive Nash without sending back salary in return.

The agreement emerged on Wednesday after rumors in recent days linked Nash as a possible sign-and-trade target for the New York Knicks. The Toronto Raptors also reportedly offered Nash a 3-year contract worth $36 million.

Nash, 38, spent the last seven seasons with the Suns, becoming the face of a franchise and a fan favorite. He averaged 12.5 points and 10.7 assists in 2011-12 and was named to the 2012 All-Star team, his eighth selection. He was twice named NBA MVP during his time with the Suns.

The deal cannot be made official until July 11, once the NBA's 10-day free agency moratorium is complete.

Admit it, you wanted him to join the Celtics or Heat.

Lakers ain't done. They still gotta trade Gasol to the Wolves, Rockets, Hawks or 76ers. They'll get a PF who won't disappear in the playoffs and just need to sign a SF with the mini-MLE.

Also comes down to Bynum figuring it out come playoff time.

I'm assuming that Bynum gets traded for Howard, but that's not a sure thing.

Watch Kobe's efficiency improve immensely. Nash is Suspect on defense but a god on offense.  Fuck I hate the Yankees of the NBA!  Oh well they always find a way.

NIK, u approve of this move? Kobe did lobby for him to join lakers after all

of course i approve of this, it's steve nash...now, if we trade pau gasol for josh smith, we on. we need some younger legs+athleticism.
nash aint the best on d, so we'll need an iman shumpert type player off the bench, who can d up the elite point guards. goudelock showed glimpses of good defense, but i dunno if he's ready to become that. other than that, this is gunna be a great season for the Lakers and especially Kobe, as he will do his best to get Nash that first ring. and like u said, efficiency will improve immensely, as this is the first time Kobe's played with a legit point guard.

roster as of now...

PG Steve Nash..Steve Blake/Darius Johnson-Odom
SG Kobe Bryant..Andrew Goudelock/Darius Morris
SF Ron Artest..Matt Barnes/Devin Ebanks
PF Pau Gasol...Josh McRoberts/Christian Eyenga
C Andrew Bynum...Robert Sacre

looks better
