Fergie decks Becks

Cut above the rest ... Beckham sports scar this morning
By NEIL CUSTIS

DAVID Beckham needed stitches in a head wound after Sir Alex Ferguson kicked a football boot in his face during an amazing dressing room bust-up.

Becks, 27, needed two stitches after the Manchester United manager exploded at his players for losing to Arsenal in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday.

Sir Alex stormed into the Old Trafford dressing room and lashed out at the boot.

It flew across the room and struck England captain Beckham.

The midfield ace reacted furiously. Becks was given stitches and left the ground with a dressing on his head 25 minutes before the other players.

He went straight to his car with wife Victoria, 28, and son Brooklyn, three.

There is no suggestion Sir Alex, 61, meant to hurt Beckham, who had been taken off the pitch in the second half after injuring his right leg.

DAVID Beckham went berserk after Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson struck him.

The midfield ace clutched his head as blood poured from the wound after the flying boot whacked him.

He was quickly patched up by Old Trafford medics before storming out of the ground with wife Posh and son Brooklyn in tow.

The incident immediately created fears of a major rift between the midfielder and his manager which could wreck United’s season.

The two men have a history of bust-ups — often over the player’s lifestyle.

Becks’s place for Wednesday’s home match with Juventus in the Champions League was already under doubt because of his injury.

England legend and Sun columnist Jimmy Greaves said the incident after the FA Cup 5th round defeat was proof that Fergie’s passion for football is still strong.

But he urged the boss to publicly make up with his star player.

Greaves said: “If anyone thought Fergie was calming down now he has turned 60 they are very wrong.

“He will need to make up with the player before the situation starts to overshadow their season.”

In July 1999, the pair had a run-in when Sir Alex told the England skipper to cut short his honeymoon by three days and return to training.

The hairdryer treatment ... Sir Alex
The following October, Becks was fined two weeks’ wages for partying the night before the team flew to Austria for a crucial European tie.

Also in 1999, they had a row on the way to the World Club Championships over travel arrangements.

In February 2000, Becks was on the verge of quitting the club after a row over him missing training to care for his poorly son Brooklyn.

Fergie was also furious when Becks told a Spanish magazine he always dreamed of playing for European rivals Barcelona.

But Becks was said to be “spitting blood” in December 2001 when Fergie dropped him as he felt he was drained while playing for England.

Fergie’s temper is legendary in football.

Millwall boss Mark McGhee told last night how his rages have been dubbed The Hairdryer.

McGhee, who witnessed one outburst while a player under Ferguson at Aberdeen, said:

“A lot of players have had ‘the hairdryer’ off Alex — he really blasts you.”

Fergie's tactics of terror in the dressing room provoked reactions from his players that led to awesome on-field performances

FACT

Certain players have lost their desire to work hard week in week out in order to win trophies at United

"My greatest challenge is not what's happening at the moment, my greatest challenge was knocking Liverpool right off their fucking perch. And you can print that." Alex Ferguson
