Guru - Jazzmatazz (Series Appreciation Thread)
« on: April 03, 2013, 02:00:39 AM »
Bumped vol 1 a personal classic last night.

Can't believe it's maybe 18 years since I got the CD (had the cassette before that) :o

So many heroes on this, Donald Byrd, Roy Ayers, Lonnie Liston Smith, N'Dea Davenport and I was big into Bradford Marsalis, MC Solar and Ronnie Jordan back them too. Never a big Guru fan but he holds his on hosting this

Drop your thoughts on the series here people 8) 8) 8)

vol 1 was good.

Don't sleep on vol 2

'My Medicine' was on repeat back in the day

Dope features. Strong songs, and more experimental sounds. Guru is lyrically tighter than vol 1 by a bit.

Vol 1 is magic but they took time to make its follow up sound right  8)

Correct.

I liked #1, never checked the second though, how would you compare the two?

Vol 2 is a bit of a different format. Less of that Blue Note Jazz sound and more of a hiphop sound overall. Guru steps his game up and does more than just narrate the album and spit some bars like vol 1 (feels more like a Guru solo, with dope feats in a way)

Lots of dope stuff on there

Both albums have their merits. I think they're equally good 8)

Never heard vol 1 (shame on me) but I personally own vol 2 + 3 + that Timebomb Back to the future mixtape. How is volume 4? Worth checking?

And on volume 1 Guru doesn't actually spit verses?

He does both but sometimes his voice is mixed in like an instrument on some of the tracks, or he's talking/narrating

Or his rhymes are more simplistic

Donald Byrd word,
On the track
Quite exact
Giving you the format Jack

And he fits around the music

I know people hate the producer guy, Solar, but I love the song he produced called State of Clarity featuring Common. Both the original and remix.

enjoy them all, even 4 is good, but 1 edges it as the best - too smooth. appreciate the chaka kahn and jamiroquai on #2. the third one is somewhat more street but very nice indeed, one of the best albums at the time.
