Coolio Appreciation Thread
« on: September 18, 2013, 08:41:45 AM »
About time this nicca got some respect for putting it down so nicely all those years representin the West.  Maybe if he had not had so much mainstream success he would get more props at this forum, but nobody ever talks about the dude.  Here are some of his career highlights...

WC and The Madd Circle-  That's right, he was a part of this crew before he made it big.  Nicca was down with a WC, and was also down with a lot of cats from the Golden State Camp, like the Alkoholiks, Rass Kass, and so on.  He wasn't just some guy that the label picked up to piggy back off the success of Snoop, he was well respected out West.

"Fantastic Voyage"-  Sure, this joint was a little contrived, but if you were old enough you know you were loving this joint, and that it blew up the whole summer long.

"I Remember" - This cut is so nice it can bring tears to your eyes.  The production really takes you back, I assume that's LV on the hook doing his thing, and J-Ro and them come with some really thoughtful, nostalgic lyrics.

"Mama I'm In Love With A Gangsta" - Coolio and Lashon go back and forth on this track, trading verses, it's an argument between the two of them, over a prison phone, but it's also a love song at the same time.  Classic shit.

"Gangsters Paradise"  - Don't front.  This was a monster joint.  Sure they played it out and its not something I go back and listen to now.  But you know you loved it when you first heard it.

"C U When You Get THere"  - Hip-hop meets classical for a touching peace of art.

word.. I admit I never really had any of his albums, except his greatest hits album, but I was always a fan and respected him.  I had the above tracks dubbed on a mixtape I listened to all summer during that time.

I liked Coolio back in the day, some fave tracks of mine:

Fantastic Voyage
Too Hot
1,2,3,4 (Stumpin' New)
Smilin'
Ooh La La
and of course.....Keenan & Kel Theme tune haha

I know almost all of these were commercial but i dont care! Commercial hip hop around that time was good when the whole G-Funk sound was in!

the grittier songs on fantastic voyage like can of corn and trapped in the closet and a few others were extremely dope i heard county line like a year before fantastic voyage hit as a single.

its one of the best usages of the more bounce sample out there.

Yeah "it takes a theif" is a fucking classic album! i was like 12 when that came out used to love it.
I didnt like his second album so much but maybe because "gangstas paradise"(great song0 got so played out and that "too hot" single sucked ansd i didnt overly like "1,2,3,4"
His third album was pretty cool.
Seems he went more underground after that/
I got his "Elcoolmagnifico" album and it is fucking dope as fuck!
His "the return of the gangsta" album is pretty fucking cool too!
he put out a pretty cool sing;e with Snoop called "gangsta walk"(i think thats what it is called) Cool shit  8)

And yeah i always wondered why he stopped making songs with Raskass an them?
