Modern Funk
« on: December 13, 2013, 05:41:20 PM »
Well after Snoop and Dam-Funk dropped that that 7 days of Funk EP (LP?). i thought maybe now is the to introduce modern funk to some cats that werent aware of it.
First of all, Dam-Funk is like the George Clinton of this Modern Funk movement, he is the Alfa...he made this genre popular (i think he even gave modern funk its name). But there are many other cats doing their thing.
My Favorite Artist right now are:

B.Brave (Just check his track computa love and youll know what i mean)
Onra (he is not just a modern funk artist but he has many tracks in that genre)
XL Middleton (used to be a g-funk artist, but recently he switched to modern funk)
all the cats on Omega Supreme Records (SASAC, Henning, Turqoise Summer) very dope young cats check the compilation the put out recently - http://omegasupremerecords.com/album/raw-silk-vol-1
Tokimonsta (weird shit but there are couple tracks that are really dope)
Amalia (Take Erkyah Badu and put her on some Modern Funk shit..you get Amalia
)Funkmaster Forte (smooth track, hmm more 80s polisjed boggie than modern funk but still super dope)
AD Bourke (same as Tokmonsta not a straight modern funk cat, but if you dig you can find some gems)
Nickee B -  (just listen and enjoy, reminds me alot of the music that was in the F-Zero Snes game)
Tryezz (uptembo, almost electro...but i kinda like it. Sounds to me like some 16 bit music on sterioid)

feel free to add

good treat...
i also realized that funk even got something like a little reneaissance in the mainstream, similar to the 80's when disco was popular...
i mean, there was a few "pop"-songs with a funk influence in the radio the last time..."blurred lines", "treasure" from bruno mars or even that one justin timerlake-track...

but to stick to the topic, a good modern funk band is "slapbak" from orange county, california...check them out...their bassist, vocalist and mastermind jara harris got mad skills!

Are there any compilations that showcase artists mentioned above or new funk in general?

slapbak were more p-funk oriented though, not really modern funk in the traditional sense of the term, Fingaz was part of the band if i'm not mistaken, good shit

tryezz is the one that resonates with me the strongest. peeps may have noticed i've been posting his stuff here for a while. his sound definitely has that videogame influence, it's a crazy twist of electronic and dilla-esque rhythms. grooves for days, gorgeous use of synths and his sounds have got better and better, more and more epic. impressive for a one man operation, i can't imagine what dude will do as he evolves and uses bigger and better equipment. his various EPs and tracks remain amongst my most played new music in the past few years.

his latest EP '7 Flow' just dropped
