Love Letter Virus

The virus may not come to you in the email as you would expect, but could be on your mp3 downloads.

I had some company over tonight and I let them make some cd's and I guess they downloaded a virus in the form of a corrupted mp3 file, which corrupted every single fucking mp3 and jpg I had on my hard drive and changed them all to .vbs

Please check your mp3s before you play them. If you get one with the .vbs properties, delete it immediately and scan your system for viruses.

Also, make sure your Windows program defaults are set up properly to help keep you from getting this virus. This is the backdoor program that the virus uses to overwrite your filenames and change its extentions. Heres how to do it...

Control Panel / Add Remove Programs / Windows Set Up Tab / Double Click Accessories / and uncheck the Windows Scripting Host

I think thats false... why? Because an mp3 is not an executed file... you can't make an mp3 do anything unless you have something to read it ... sometimes they might make you confused by ending the file in something like this .mp3.exe
but from my knowledge an mp3 can't execute a virus...

Sweetie, I'm seriously not playin with you... I know exactly what I'm talking about. One... I never open email, this happened using Win MX and when I ran my gateway go back program, I could see what song file was downloaded and seen how the virus started finding deleting and renaming every last one of my fucking files from 6:30pm to 8:30pm



See, the file name was .mp3 but the properties of it was a .vbs and once it's opened, the virus quietly works by changing the file extention from an .mp3 to a .vbs and it finds / edit / deletes all the .mp3 and .jpg files on your computer. It has to do with Windows and that default script host.

I'm going to go take a warm bath and slit my wrists... I'm exagerating but for real I lost a years worth of pictures, albums I was working on, you know... everything. I feel quite pissed off and sad at the same time. The only way to get rid of the Love Letter is to delete all the files. There is no recovery unless you made a backup disk and I fucking blew it.

Did you understand what I said? It wasn't really an mp3 just cause the song name said so, the properties were viral vbs.

well i have an anti virus prog so i dont need to worry ... the only way i know of is renameing the file .mp3.vb u mite not be able to see da full extention, to do that
clik on tools/ folder options/ veiw(tab)/ uncheck "HIDE FILE EXTENTIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES"

n bout da windows scriptin host hmm, i wouldn't remove it...as it is neccery to run most programs

I used Gateway go back when my shit fucks up... you can revert your hard drive back to a time before you d/l that file... then you're hard drive will  have all your information again... ive done that twice with viruses.... my mom needs to learn not to open attachements

Well, I'm, just reporting what I had to learn too quickly  tonight from resarching through Zdnet, Microsoft and Symantec. It's not something you would know unless you were looking for it.

My Norton Anti Virus v2001 didn't catch it, it runs at email and start up only, not everytime I d/l mp3's ::rat bastards::  gateway go back doesn't go back far enough  ::fuck gateway::  and the only way to get rid of it is to delete every last one of my 2,500 files.


You know how hard it is to have all your favorite pictures lost? I must have had a years worth of family pictures that I was still busy organizing before this happened. Plus you know how hard it is to burn a perfect cd after searching for months, making sure it's complete, etc. I just dont want it to happen to you so, heads up my brothers...
