Maybe it was highjacked (skyjack?)...But perhaps...

The plane accidentally ripped through the space-time continuum placing them in an alternate dimension, thus preventing them from sending a distress signal. They crashed in to the water, many were killed but a handful of survivors were able to make it to the shore of a seemingly abandoned tropical island.

I haven't seen it yet but I do own the collection and have been watching them. Are you talking the original or 80's series?

^Sounds like someone heard the report about the stray North Korean missile missing an airplane the week before & thought it would be an interesting conflict to create that event actually happening between China & North Korea.
