Some more recent listens:

1. WC - The Shadiest One: one of the last no-nonsense gangsta rap albums from the golden age of west-coast rap.  Some of Battlecat's most banging beats on this one, decent guest features and WC is great.  No skipping of any tracks required here.

2. MF DOOM - mm..food: another album that lends itself to a full listen front-to-back.  Probably the best DOOM album and one of the easiest to get into, with all song names containing a food, but applied to everyday rap topics.  As per usual on a DOOM album, tons of fun sample collages that segue into and even within the individual tracks combined with extremely clever and witty lyrics and thoughts.  I can't stop listening to it.

3. Monsta Island Czars - Escape from Monsta Island!: a bunch of rappers associated with, and including MF DOOM, who take on monster movie monikers (King Ghidra, Rodan, Kong etc).  Comparable in a way to the first Wu-Tang album with lots of posse cuts, Japanese monster film samples and low-budget production.  Noteable for the fact that one of the tracks has the same sample as 2Pac's 'California Love' remix, which stands out like a sore thumb on a rugged NY hip-hop album.  Interesting listen and worth checking out for something different.

4. Michael Jackson - Off The Wall Special Edition: the disco/funk classic updated with a couple of demos of the tracks 'Don't Stop...' and 'Workin' Day and Night'.  Phenomenally well-produced and timeless.  No more explanation required.

5. Tha Dogg Pound - Cali Iz Active: kinda didn't think much of it when I first got it because I was obsessed with Dogg Food at the time, but over the years have come to enjoy it.  Lyrically not as strong as Dogg Food or Daz and Kurupt's previous solo efforts, but contains some personal classic DPG stuff such as the title track and 'Thrown Up Tha C'.  Disappointed with the Nate Dogg contributions here though; without his name in the credits you wouldn't even notice he was on the album.

Usually I only listen to old shit, but every now and then I need new music to build new memories... I only bought one album all year last year and it was bought especially for my 2014 journey to the Motherland in West Africa, so you know it had to be the most bomb Reggae album of the last couple years...

Gyptian- Love, Sex, and Reggae   8)  Album is Fire!!!  ...and now I bump it anytime I want to recall all the good vibes from my trip.

...the best new music is not hip-hop anymore, the best new shit the last several years is coming out of Reggae and it's coming from artists like Jah Cure and Gyptian
