Hip-hop or G-Funk artists that also/mainly/only sing
« on: October 27, 2016, 01:48:49 AM »
I am looking to expand my collection of artists that can also (or only) sing on their records. So far I've got:

West Coast:
- Nate Dogg
- Butch Cassidy
- Kokane
- K-Young
- LV
- Bo Roc

East Coast:
- Sen City
- Kobe
- Akon

Dirty South:
- Z-Ro
- Chamillionaire
- Chalie Boy
- T-Pain
- Kevin Gates

There might be some others that I know of that I can't remember, but I am sure that there are plenty that I haven't even heard of yet. Any suggestions?

Please do not include any R&B artists like Chris Brown, Ne-Yo etc etc as I don't like any of those.

Fo'Clips has been mentionned above. Very talented, unfortunately killed too soon :

Check his album "Just be thankful" if you haven't already. Pure G-Funk, soulful and gangsta.

Thanks a lot guys, I appreciate the suggestions up to now, keep them coming. I found a couple of new artists that I'd like to check out further, but overall most of these were way too soulful for me. I am looking for singers with a gangsta feel to it, similar to the ones I've listed.

Can I get some more info on Jelly Roll?? I've known him for ages from his features on high profile west coast rappers, but apart from that It is difficult to find if he has any solo tracks or less famous features. All results bring up the Dirty South Jelly Roll instead (who is super dope as well, don't sleep on him)

I also couldn't find jack on The D.E.E.P. , not even a single track.  ???

The D.E.E.P. is a short lived group who put out a very low-key album in 1997. It's composed of rappers and a singer. The album was entirely produced by Paris and some of the beats were re-used on Spice 1's The Black Bossalini. They're from Carson / Long Beach.

If we're for looking for singers with a gangsta twist, then we can shorten the list to these aforementioned names :

West
Anderson .Paak
Blaqthoven
Bosko
Domino
Ephriam Galloway
Fo Clipse
Jelly Roll
Latoyia Williams
Levitti
Lil Half Dead
Matt Blaque
Otis & Shugg
Sam Bostic

South
Big K.R.I.T.
Billy Cook
Cee Lo Green
Devin the Dude
Jazze Pha
Magnolia Chop
Mo B. Dick
O'Dell (No Limit background / hook singer)
Papa Reu
Porsha
Pimp C
Ronnie Spencer
Russell Lee

I also forgot to mention Sleepy Brown in the South and of course Johnny P from the Midwest.

some notable songs some of them are featured on
Magnolia Chop

even though he raps too, I agree with that... dude is one of the only (if not the only) east coast rappers to touch a bunch of rare west coast beats on his mixtapes, you can tell he was heavily influenced by G-Funk and I can see why Warren G had shouted him out years back
