I always thought Top Dogg was underrated.  If anything, I thought he sounded more like Silkk The Shocker than Snoop Dogg.  Kind of stinks these guys got saddled with the gimmicks.  I'm sure Suge's intention was getting sound-alikes, but I'm sure any of you would have done the same thing.  If you were a struggling artist and were offered a contract to sign with Death Row and you had to change your name to Top Dogg, I'm sure you would have done it too.  I would.  He sounded like the 92-93 snoop, but by the time he came out in 1999, he didn't sound anything like the 1999 Snoop to me.

I never really cared if they sounded like Snoop or 2Pac or not.  Some of their songs were tight.  We Don't Love Em by Top Dogg is an awesome song.  I've been a fan since the early 90's, so to me, I could easily differentiate them from 2Pac and Snoop.  No confusion from me.

IMO he sounded like a cross between CPO and Too Short. When I listened to him, I never thought "damn, this guy sounds identical to Snoop".

FAKE NEWS!! That sounds dumb and it just sounds like a BIASED HATER (who views things in favor of only Dre Groupie) -- "Fake 2pac" -- no, he's a guy that has a whole CATALOG of hits blessed by the GREATEST Executive Producer of all time -- Suge Knight -- "Want From Me", "Takin Pictures in the Cemetary," "Gotta Luv Gangstas," "Murder Murder", "Slow Down," "My Summertime Fling", "Way Too Real," "Hotel Talk [Everything Is Everything]", "Made This Way," "Drunk Drivin In My Glasshouse," "Waiting For Jesus To Come," "Life's Good," and on and on and on

Did any of them chart on Billboard? Get massive radio play? Get any radio play? Get any recognition at all outside of internet message boards?

No. He hasn't had a hit record. Ever. The part about Tha Realest is 100% accurate when you listen to his DR material and see that he's doing his best 2pac impersonation and with some songs, he might have even used pre-written 2pac lyrics.

I like Realest, but I have to agree, dude even got the same tattoos as Pac.  And I even think Death Row toned him down a bit, if you listen to some of the unreleased songs from the Inside Out Compilation, he's saying "thug life" and stuff like that.  I don't think he's doing that on any of his released songs.  Doesn't change the fact that he's got some good songs out there, but when comparing him to Top Dogg, I don't really think Top Dogg went out of his way to look like snoop or really imitate snoop that much.  He can't help his voice sounds similar, but he had a totally different flow than the 1999 version of snoop.

Article was spot on. Suge was on some petty bullshit with copycat artists. Suge black-balled himself with that dumb shit.

Top Dogg wasn't a "copy cat" artist other than he had "Dogg" in his name but then again so did Nate "Dogg" -- doesn't mean he was a copy cat -- and "All About U" was serviced on MTV to promote Top Dogg -- MTV hosts would even say "Here's 'All About U' featuring Top Dogg'" as Interscope was setting up to push him, then they decided to drop Tha Row before the "Cindafella" single came out, which ended up getting play on BET & The Box via Priority Records

You guys that say Tha Realest is a "copy cat" artist then why did all these acts stamp him as official by doing records with him? Daz did records with him, Outlawz did records with him, Kurupt did records with him, Scarface did records with him, Richie Rich, Yukmouth, Mac Shawn, Swoop G, etc.

Really interesting read.  After all this time that's the first time I've ever seen the video to J-Flexx's 'Who Been There, Who Done That'.

Exactly! So they stamped it as quality music!
