The best of greatest hits

Hi there!


I buy a lot of best of cds, and post their pics on the cds topic ( http://www.dubcnn.com/connect/index.php?topic=264478.0 ), and Okka asked once why i do that.

Got 2 reason.
-If i collect the artist i want his full discogs.
-or i aint know the artist, and buy his hits to know him.

I am old school guy from the 90s when we buy cds, tapes, vinyls to listen the music, sorry.

In the last 2 decades i bought good and bad compilations too. Someone asked bout the goods.

If the compilation aint just a collection of hits or there is a twist on that a best of cd could be interesting.

For example when the best of got a bonus dvd with the videos its turn a "buy one get 2 product", like Kurupts greatest ( https://www.discogs.com/Kurupt-Kurupts-Greatest/release/4188720 ), or Cubes best of ( https://www.discogs.com/Ice-Cube-Greatest-Hits/release/12046835 ), or ODBs ( https://www.discogs.com/Ol-Dirty-Bastard-The-Definitive-Ol-Dirty-Bastard-Story/release/503916 ) these are simple compilations, but with an extra for the buyers. Good idea IMO.

cube got "thematic compilations" (in the movies, featuring ice cube, bootlegs and b-sides) too, whats a good idea too IMO.

only meet once, but the epmd version when an "actual album got bonus best of" was interesting ( https://www.discogs.com/EPMD-Out-Of-Business/release/1564473 ) too.

Better when we get some rare, b-sides as an xtra disc, like CNN best of: https://www.discogs.com/Capone-N-Noreaga-The-Best-Of-Capone-N-Noreaga-Thugged-Da-F-Out/master/414456

This CNN is one of my all time fav compilation couse of this reason.

I like when the group dj make a best of mixtape official, like dilated peoples ( https://www.discogs.com/Dilated-Peoples-Dilated-Classics/release/1062689 ) Alkaholiks ( https://www.discogs.com/Tha-Alkaholiks-Mixed-Drinks-The-Best-Of-Tha-Alkoholiks/release/1930011 ), or cut chemist jurassic 5 tape ( https://www.discogs.com/Jurassic-5-LA-Takedown/release/1225696 )

OR when a good dj/ARTIST made for someone else, like J.Period did for Big Daddy Kane ( https://www.discogs.com/DJ-J-Period-Presents-Big-Daddy-Kane-Best-Of-Big-Daddy-Kane/release/1309178 )

Like it when the artist put extra work and money on a greatest hits, like cypress did with his espanol version ( https://www.discogs.com/Cypress-Hill-Los-Grandes-%C3%89xitos-En-Espa%C3%B1ol/master/17036 ) or dj quik did with the la leakers with those comments with each track on it ( https://www.discogs.com/DJ-Quik-The-Audio-Biography-Of-David-Mixtape/master/663788 )

I like the "live versions" of best ofs like quik again ( https://www.discogs.com/DJ-Quik-Greatest-Hits-Live-At-The-House-Of-Blues/release/2087695 ) or cypress ( https://www.discogs.com/Cypress-Hill-Live-At-The-Fillmore/master/17141 )

 

THE OTHER SIDE:


What i DONT really like, when we get a compilation with 1 or 2 unreleased song. this looks like a simple robbery to me, cant explain why. for this there are tons of example.

Dont like either when somebody got "more" compilation than normal album. Like Cube. he got greatest hits, the essentials, 10 great songs, and icon. these 4 are all official best ofs. Spice 1 is the other one who got tons of best of compilation so do snoop dogg.

dont like the lazy type best ofs, like Xzibit compilations. he got 2 already ( https://www.discogs.com/Xzibit-Super-Hits/release/13617395 , https://www.discogs.com/Xzibit-Greatest-Hits/master/1331742 ) and none of em really good, none of em got all his hits till the cds release. aint got all his singles either! WHO Da phuck did those?

Cant imagine why is that happened if somebody with a label over decades and still aint get a normal greatest hits (redman, method man, onyx). this one looks like a disrespect of the artist to me.
