Celly Cel - Killa Kali
March 1996 issue
2 1/2 mics

Celly Cel first entered the scene with Heat Fo Yo Azz, a joint which earned him recognition as one of Killa Cali's flyest. Then he disappeared, only to resurface on the radio version of E-40's "Dusted and Disgusted." Now Cel returns with his sophomore release, Killa Kali, an album that sticks to the lyrical and production formula of his debut.

Killa Kali opens with "What You Niggas Thought," a funky, synthesized track which Cel uses to let suckas know how "to bring the white chalk/and to scrape the bodies off the asphalt." On the downside there's "Killa for the Scrilla," which features E-40. The lyrics are cool enough, but the track sounds like music for the Fox kids network show. "Goose Bumps," "Can't Tell a Nigga Shit" and Red Rum," which features Spice 1, are other notables to check for. But the winner of the max volume contest has to be "It's Going Down," a standout track that freaks elements from "Computer Love." Cel completes this cut's appeal with his laid back pimp style flow, dropping lyrics on the nightly agenda.

Unfortunately, the remainder of the CD comes off pretty mediocre, primarily because of the inconsistent production. When it comes to style and lyrics, Cel can hold his own; but his timing is slightly off every now and then. Overall, Killa Kali is a fairly decent effort, but there isn't anything that seperates if from the rest of the reality market.

Hittman is not a real person. He was a computer program generated by Dr. Dre and Mel Man back in the mid 90's. When Dre started treating Mel-Man like shit, Mel infiltrated the computer and put a virus in the hittman program

Killa Kali was tight, I always felt this should have been the album to give Celly Cel some mainstream success.

The Source review is bullshit.  Killa 4 Tha Scrilla sounds nothing like the Goosebumps theme.
