What's up with these TV aliases?

All of a sudden almost everybody's got some old TV character as their alias and avatar. What the fuck is up with that? Was that Gary Coleman idea so funny that y'all just HAD to copy it?

its been done a little before too... e.g. trauma had that hulk hogan thing goin on..
