Is Aftermath REALLY indepedant?
« on: July 16, 2003, 10:02:29 AM »
How can it really be "Dre's" own label for him to call his own shots and release what he wants, when he wants when it's gotta pass Jimmy at Interscope?  All this talk of them rejecting Rakim's new one and Em's last one has got me thinking....That's fucked up when you got your own label and someone tells you that you can't release an album.

Aftermath is a vanity plate, its a desk at interscope.

Right, I just think it's fucked up that Dre can't release whatever HE wants....it all comes down to someone else's decision, when all these other indepedant record labels release anything they want.

Aftermath isn't independent. It's a joint venture with Interscope. Most indepedent labels just sign distribution deals with various companies, sometimes including the majors. Aftermath is locked in with Interscope, and I think techically Interscope own Aftermath, so Dre wouldn't be able to use the Aftermath name anywhere else if he quit Interscope.

What really pisses me off is Jimmy is all ways going on
about how great Dre is a producer and he is a genius
well why the fuck do you stop him releasing his artists
records and fuckin' them about. Yeah Dre should leave
Interscope cause he can easily go some where else cause
Dre is great at what he does and people whould be dying
to get Dre to sign with them, but the only downside to that
is Dre whould lose all his roster cause they signed with
Interscope.

Whats the use of having your own label if you can't release nuthin'. Interscope can release a Bubba Sparks album ,but no Rakim after all this time. Dre should have more to do with albums being released on his label why the hell even sign anyone when they'll never drop an album on your label. Even if its a problem on Interscope's behalf it makes Dre look bad in the eyes of all the people waitin for these albums that never see light and it gives the haters something to talk about. I wonder what's next for aftermath ?

I think Dre owns 50% and Interscope owns 50%. At least that's what I remember after Dre left Death Row. He went from owning 50% of Death Row, which was independant of a major label dictating them because Death Row independant, where as Aftermath is connected to Interscope. Though i remember hearing how much freedom they would allow Dre to release stuff on Aftermath, more so than Suge, which Suge didn't care what was released, as long as it was raw and streets. So I wonder what happened to the promised freedom. Maybe it was ... Presents The Aftermath?

Did you all forget Dre selling his half of Aftermath to Interscope like a year ago? Thats what made him the highest paid musician last year. I dunno if Dre owns any of Aftermath anymore, but if he does it's a tiny percentage of it.

yeah i was jus gonna say, didnt he sell like anopther 20-30% of his share to interscope and like he now only owns like 20-30% percent of aftermath? cuz then really no wonder interscope be makin all the decisions..........whats happenin to hip hop, niggaz be releasin joints of bubba, nelly, ja rule, even other hip hop head who are actually aiight but cant say yes to releasin a album off a legend like rakim........jus what hip hop needed was a real album and its jus what we might no be gettin now
