Joe Budden - Self Titled
« on: September 01, 2003, 08:43:13 AM »

Pros
Budden's tales of growing up

Cons
Alot of uninspired material. Very very commercial sounding, in a bad way.

The Bottom Line
Joe can do much better than this, and you can do much better, by avoiding this.

Full Review
Joe Budden represents the new generation of Def Jam artists, a Jersey native that has build up some strong hype on the mixtape scene. Well known throughout the East Coast, Budden's finally steps upto album status. A young man with a dark past of alcohol, drugs and depression, surely a tour into Budden's world is going to one well worth the price of admission?

Unfortunately no, a few moments of introspective brilliance are overshadowed by the plague of unoriginal pop hip hop. There is nothing wrong with a rapper aiming for the mainstream, but if he can't bring anything new, and the production is a mixed bag, than he oughta not bother trying. Budden's would of been much better of aiming for a more achievable goal for himself, of bringing us a real street album, rather than this sham. Anyway here is how the tracks played:

1. Intro - NA

2. #1 - 3/5
Decent song. Its a nice hype song and it has no hook (similair to Roscoe's 5 Seconds)

3. Pump It Up - 4/5
Im shocked this was such a huge club hit even with a unknown rapper on the mic and a raspy delivery. Good hype song naturally

4. Pusha Man - 4/5
Funky style beat, has Budden's almost whispering his verses, to great effect. A real gangsta track, about dealin, not original, but enjoyable no less.
"Blastin the tool, you out of character dude
You not a felon or rider, you a fellow subscriber
Who is you tellin them lies to, don't push it to a limit
to mimic you benefiting to what, the gimmicks up, BLAH"

5. U Ain't Gotta Go Home - 3/5
Pumped up beat, and Budden raises his tempo to match it. As a commercial track it's not bad, but unfortunately for Joe, it's the beat that makes it.

6. Walk With Me - 5/5
Nicely produced, chill out track, as a melancholy Budden's speaks of the roads he has taken. Budden flows with the beat real well. Actually Budden excels on this track, giving us the type of stuggle rhymes we want from him. Nice.
"dog, where was the hate back when i wasn't on my feet
an alcoholic school drop out just a bum on the streets
where was the hate during my adolescence back when that psychiatrist
was tryin hard to get me on the manic depressants
so man, i dont recall none of this happening back then
so i dont understand i was still rappin back then"

7. She Wanna Know - 2/5
Commercial pop track, straight outta the Ja Rule school of weak hooks and garbage rhymes. One for the teenage girls only.

8. Survivor - 2.5/5
Change of pace RnB meets hip hop type track, makes the haunting beat feel wasted though. Average.

9. Fire - 2/5
Another club type track, but Budden's rhymes are woeful, the hook is terrible, and the beat barely raises the pulse. Even Busta can't save this track.

10. Ma Ma Ma - 3.5/5
112 support Budden's with there typical pop RnB. The end result isn't all that bad, this is a much better pop type track. The major problem with this is that 112 outshines Budden.

11. Calm Down - 5/5
This is one of my fave track on this album, dope beat, as Budden's talks about growing up and his relationship with his mother. One of the few tracks on this album that i regularly bump. Budden spits such raw emotions and feelings, making the listener really feel it.
"Listen... ain't s**t like seeing your moms crying on the floor
Knowing you the reason why she ain't alright no more
But so young, I was like whatever
You use to chase me through the house with the knife like get your life together"

12. Focus - 4/5
The beats different, real raw sounding, rhymes are terrible....real street sounding knocker
and White Boy is very simple on the beat....Buddens ruined the song when he gave this to Jlo

13. Give Me A Reason - 3.5/5
Uptempo track, with Budden's flowing well. Very catchy song. Good.

14. Stand Up Nucca - 3.5/5
Great building track, as Budden's calls out for his 'dogs'. Has potential to be the albums gangsta anthem track. Pretty good.

15. 10 Minutes - 4/5
Yeah this track does go for about 10 minutes, as Joe raps about his life. The beat tends to grow on you after a couple of listens. Buddens sounds a little like Nas on this track, as he addresses a number of issues, and pulls off some real nice verses. While there's a genuine effort here to do something different, the tracks simply not that great to warrant 10 minutes of it.
"Some days I don't wanna be bothered
Some days I just miss my father (damn)
Some days I just miss my father
Some days I wanna relapse on redline
Cuz he'll be gone for 26 months fed time"

16. Real Life In Rap - 1/5
No matter how Jigga like Joe tries to become, fact is, the beats garbage, hell the whole song is garbage. Skip.

17. Porno Star - 2.5/5
Alot of d*ck in this track, and other sexual references. Not a bad track, the beat is nice, and while the subject matter has been played out, Budden seems to be enjoying himself.

No matter how i hard i try to see the positives in this album (Walk With Me, Pump it Up, Calm Down & 10 Minutes), i can't shake the belief that this is a truly uninspired commercial effort. It's obvious that Joe Budden is better than this effort, i know his got plenty of things to rap about, stories to tell, but instead he limits that to a handful of tracks, and serves up bucketfuls of disapointment. Instead of trying to be the next Jay-Z, Budden's should take alook at why alot of people thing he has potential, it's not because of his commercial sellability.

Even big Budden fans are gonna be unimpressed with this debut effort, sure you can hold a few tracks high, but the rest a going to be a victim of the skip button. This is commercial rap at its worst, i can't honestly recommend it to anyone, unless you pick it up real cheap.

Tight review - I think you were a bit harsh on the score though, I would give it a 3/5. The real problem here is the boring production. Joe's got plenty of skills on the mic, and he had some real good themes for the album too. It's a shame he let the uninspired production ruin it, it's really unbearable. Even Just Blaze disappointed on here (except for "Pump It Up"). He should get rid of White Boy and hire some talented producers for his next album. :P

Actually, the Just Blaze songs on here were dope. Give me a reason was all percussion but it was almost as dope as a drums only beat can be. Fire is on a different level from most club songs if u ask me.
