"Brazil took a big step towards their fifth World Cup after coming from behind to beat England 2-1 in the quarterfinal -- playing most of the second half with 10 men.

England keeper David Seaman fatally misjudged Ronaldinho's 50th minute free-kick for the winner after Rivaldo had cancelled out Michael's Owen's opening goal.

Ronaldinho was sent off eight minutes after scoring for a dangerous tackle on England defender Danny Mills. Ronaldinho and his teammates argued with the referee for several minutes before the Brazilian walked off.

But England could not make the extra man count on a hot afternoon in Shizuoka and Seaman will have nightmares about his error. He was caught off his line as Ronaldinho's free-kick from 30 metres floated into the top corner.

England had taken the lead in the 23rd minute. Emile Heskey's through ball should have been routine for Lucio but the defender failed to control it and Owen nipped in for his second goal in two games.

Rivaldo equalised in first half stoppage time, stroking the ball into the corner after being set up by Ronaldinho. It was a class goal, the first England had conceded since their opening game, and the fifth of the tournament for Rivaldo, who has scored in every match.

"The only thought we had was to be alive and not to die," said Brazil coach Luis Felipe Scolari.

England's Swedish coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said: "We could have done better, it was a great pity."

In England the game kicked off at 7.30 a.m. and about 20,000 pubs opened early for the fans. Millions of people were expected to take the day off work and a crowd estimated by police at 12,000 gathered around a giant screen at London's Trafalgar Square. Many schools also showed the game before morning lessons.

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair took time off from his work at a European Union summit in Seville, Spain, to watch the match on TV.

Fans in Brazil stayed up through the night to watch the game.

Later on Friday Germany play the U.S. and in Saturday's other quarterfinals, co-hosts South Korea meet Spain and Turkey play Senegal. The winners of that game will play Brazil in the semifinal. (Koreans reap rewards)
