It's simple why people voted for him.  Democratic leadership has ran california into the ground.  It's hurt them where they hurt the most, in their pocketbook.  Minorities don't care as much about this, because many are low wage earners, and don't have to pay taxes at the end of the year because of our graded tax schedule.

Gray Davis made huge, huge mistakes while in office.  The democratic california Senate made huge, huge mistakes, and are still in office.  Californians were tired of the democratic politics of the last 5 years.

Gray Davis made a decision early on in the campaign; that he didn't want any credible democrats running against him; he felt that if they had no better democrat to vote for, the californian people (who are largely democrat) would vote no on the recall.  Bustamante stabbed Davis in the back, and ran.  Luckily, Bustamante has also been tainted by the inadequacy of the Davis adminstration, since he's lieutenant governor.

In the end, Californians were tired of Davis's politics... I mean, you guys do realize that he accepted illegal campaign contributions from Indian reservations, correct? Why is their no outrage over this?

With no democrat to elect, Californians simply elected the most moderate, charismatic candidate.  Between Arnold, and Tom McClintock, californians voted almost 60% of the vote for REPUBLICANS, in a highly democratic state.  The reason?  The democratic party has shifted so far to the left, it alienates even DEMOCRATS.  Most Democrats are moderates, and do not agree with the extreme liberal thinking of the california senate, of Davis' administration.

From what ive read, recalls are supposedly only for criminal activities, and not simply being a crap politician. It may be that davis was a crap politician but the decision to recall him could set a worrying precedent for the future. If you can just oust unpopular leaders by launching a recall, then surely this will have awful effects on long term vision of leaders, as they try to simply satisfy there electorate for the time being and not set provisions for the future.

As for Arnie winning it, it has made the election, at least in this part of the world seem like a joke and enhance the idea that americans are stupid. But I think people forget that he's not the stupid dumbass he plays in all his films. While it seems ridiculous that arnold,of all actors, could get elected but i think as trauma said, it's because he's more middle of the road. Maybe the latino guy would have been better but itll be interesting to see how arnold can take on the big guns in politics. Good luck to him (at least he's married to a chriver, who will no doubt keep him in check)

-Only debate that he partcipated in was a debate with the questions handed to you before hand

- Held Town hall meetings (invitation only)

- Used movie quotes to "fire" up the people

- Charges of groping etc etc

- Apologizing for something he is denying...uhh wtf?

- Bitching about special interest money with Davis...but receiving special interest from his "friends"...yea big time corporations are his "friends"

- Promising he will not raise taxes.  LOL oh yea thats gonna happen.

He came out & apologized because SOME of those claims were true. HOWEVER as i already said EARLIER, Arnold is a prankster esspecially on long tiring sets, there may have been a few times he did things he thought were jokes & didnt realize it offended them, & he apologized. My dad, & many other men for that matter, I know have done little jokes or pranks that involved slapping somes ass or poking there tits

& you've gotta consider the validity of those claims. Here is a man, who has been famous for 3 decades, why havent these reports come out before, they only came out when he went for govenor. Theres alot of people who will do dirty things for money. I mean why would Arnie threaten to rape a girl during the 70's when in fact he was known to have thousands of groupies who he would sleep with.

By the way, for those who are (like this fuckstick above) wondering how he can be a govenor while being a movie star.

The fact is, he is an ex-actor now. He said he wont have much time free so movies are on hold while he is a the gov. for the next 3 years. However he may have smaller roles that fit into his schedule, like for T4 (he isnt needed its a future war movie)

King Conan will be the movie he does after this 3 year stint. He will be just the right age as in the story Conan is around 60 & he is basically passing the torch to his son, who is rumored to be either HHH or The Rock at this moment (HHH is a better choice in my opinion)

Besides, an actor & wrestler named Jesse Ventura (who coincidentally was in Predator & The Running Man, 2 Arnie classics) was Minnesota's governor & from what i heard he did a fine job.

and no California's problems didn't start with Pete Wilson that is STUPID as fuck to say.  Pete wilson was WELL out of office (for  a few years )when california problems started. Davis pussy footed around with the energy crisis, and his whole administration after his first 2-3 years started fucking up financially. Special interest spending anyone? I will admit Davis was a good governor for partially his first term. but he was no better than wilson.....go read on modern california history and you'll know what i'm talking about.

I think people are misjudging what this victory means; like I said, he didn't win because he's an actor.  That certainly helped, but McClintock, a republican, even got 13 percent of the vote.  Bustamante only got 30 percent; without Arnold, McClintock probably STILL would have won.

Arnold didn't run on any liberal beliefs; this election was about fiscal issues, and california was simply looking for a fiscal conservative, they're tired of Senate members and governors that don't know how to stop spending.  Also, say all you want about Wilson, but when he left office, California had a surplus budget, which Davis promptly spent.  

Simply put: California felt it was time to elect a republican.
