Death Row Inmate Named Honorary Citizen of Paris

Paris (CNSNews.com) - Mumia Abu Jamal, a convicted murderer and death row inmate, was awarded the status of honorary citizen of Paris last weekend in a ceremony attended by former Black Panther Angela Davis.

The Socialist mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe, said in a press release that the award was meant to be a reminder of the continuing fight against the death penalty, which was abolished in France in 1981.

Abu Jamal, who was a member of the Black Panthers and a radio personality, was sentenced to death for the 1981 murder of a Philadelphia police officer, Daniel Faulkner, but has always maintained his innocence.

Some 200 people, including the Socialist and Communist members of the Paris city council, attended the ceremony. Davis, who is now a university professor in California and was in Paris to represent the movement to free Abu Jamal, accepted the medal and certificate in his name.

H. Sterling Burnett, a Dallas-based senior fellow at the National Center for Policy Analysis, called the award "a chance for France to tweak America's nose and try to proclaim their cultural superiority for not having capital punishment."

The mayor's office did not return phone calls for a comment but the press release announcing the award called Abu Jamal a "political prisoner."

"Abu Jamal was convicted by a jury of his peers," Burnett said, "and I take it they weren't politically motivated ... and even though no Parisian served on the jury, they seem quite convinced that Abu Jamal didn't commit the crime for which he was convicted."

"If Parisians want to invite American murderers to be their honorary citizens, it is within their purview to do so. But I'd be more surprised if they invited murderers to come live in their homes," Burnett said.

Several anti-capital punishment organizations and movements around the world have called for Abu Jamal's liberation, including some that claim that he is a victim of racism and discrimination.

Abu Jamal, who was also a civil rights activist, is on death row in Pennsylvania. His sentence was overturned in December 2001 but the decision is still on appeal.

The last time the honorary citizen title was awarded in Paris was in 1971, to Pablo Picasso.

The Communist-sponsored proposal to make Jamal an honorary citizen of the French capital was approved by the city's council in 2001.

A police officer named Daniel Faulkner tried to arrest Mumia Abu Jamal's brother for driving the wrong way down a street.

CWalker, you are dumb as nails. Mamia Abu Jamal is a political prisioner. He was targeted because of his views, not what he did. I personally believe we should free Mumia Abu Jamal, and all of the other 150 political prisioners. Both black, and whites who fought for black rights.

What a country... people can get away with stealing BILLIONS of dollars (Enron) with a slap on the wrist, but someone like Mumia goes to jail as a political prisoner...

Word to that. FREE MUMIA ABU JAMAL!

Most hip-hop is now keyboard driven, because the majority of hip-hop workstations have loops and patches that enable somebody with marginal skills to put tracks together,...

Unfortunately, most hip-hop artists gravitated towards the path of least resistance by relying on these pre-set patches. As a result, electric guitar and real musicians became devalued, and a lot of hip-hop now sounds the same.

If Mumia Abu Jamal is innocent, then who shot and killed Daniel Faulkner? Was it a ghost? Or probably the same mysterious person who killed OJ's wife.
Get real man. Wake up and stop being brainwashed.

I don't know who did. Frankly I don't care. But Abu Jamal is a known political prisioner, who was not in jail for murder, but because of his beliefs. Frankly, who killed the cop, that is up to God and that person, but Abu Jamal is an innocent man that is a political prisioner in a United States country that was aiming to get him in jail no matter what. And who would brainwash me on stuff, when I present facts, numbers, and original ideas that I back with research and life experience. It's called education, get some.
