This is how to get on mIRC, and download music/games/musicvideoz/movies from either BOTS or F Serves.
BUY THE ALBUMS IF YOU LIKE THEM.
Also Chat about music, games, movies etc. with fellow rats.

(See explanation about F Serves & BOTS in their respective sections)

Note:
* mIRC is free.
They might want you to register it, but you don't have to if you do not wish.

This is Version 5, where I have added & simplified a lot, and improved the "ERRORS and FAQS", and also "TIPS and TRICKS" sections.

TIPS AND TRICKS is for the more advanced users, who knows the basics, and want to be more efficient and download and search easier.
Downloading DCCAssist is recommended for all users, as it makes life on mirc a lot easier. (See own section)


Step 1: Downloading mIRC
Download mIRC HERE


Step 2: The Installation
Install it, follow the instructions. Like any other program..


Step 3: Setting up mIRC
Open up mIRC, and go into the OPTIONS on the left side, choose CONNECT, and go to IRC NETWORK on the right side.
Choose EFNET, and in the box below choose a server near your location. (In my case, Oslo)

In the box NICK-NAME, type your prefered name, in my case Jome.
Choose a unique name, e.g. NOT 2Pac (It may be taken already)
To change nick later on, simply type:
/nick Mynick
in one of the channels.

While still in OPTIONS, go left again, and find OPTIONS under the CONNECT-option, click OPTIONS, and open the "PERFORM"-button on the right side.
Check the box "Enable perform on connect".

Note that you can set up mirc to join different channels on each server (Add/delete), change the topdown menu to change server, e.g. EFnet, Rizon, etc.
See the DCCAssist section for how to join multiple networks. EFnet & Rizon is two of the biggest networks for music.
In the box you write in the channels you want to join when mIRC starts up, in my case I've written these in for the different networks:

Some channels might be locked/closed down, temp or permanent.
You can set mirc up to join any network/channel, these are just a few examples.

You can be in as many channels as you want.
To join your fav. channel on startup, use the command:
/join #mychannel

NOW HIT OK to save your changes.


Step 4: Starting up with mIRC
Now click the CONNECT-button, and you'll be taken to all the channels you have set it up to join.
You can be in dozens of channel at once, and just hit the channel-button to go back and forth from them.
Here you can just talk or download music.


Step 5:  Downloading music
If you want to set your mIRC up to download music, do this:
In OPTIONS, go to DCC and see under ON SEND REQUEST.
If you have this set to IGNORE ALL, you will not be able to receive files.
Therefore you choose SHOW GET DIALOG, and then you will be asked when someone sends you a file. That's for your own safety, but if you have antivirus/firewall installed and want to receive files automatically, choose instead AUTO-GET FILE. (Warning: Dangerous if you don't have anti-virus)

In a channel you can download music if it's set up to do so.
#Westcoastconnection doesn't usually have music to download, unless you ask in the channel, and then maybe someone will send it to you.
Bigger channels like #Distribution or #gangsta-vibez have been set up to serve files, and here you can dowload music from either a F SERVE or a BOT.

NOTE: Asking TOO much, or personal messaging repeated times asking for shit can get you banned from the channel.
Ask TOO much, and you will be kicked or banned, normal manners apply.
Ask for a track/album in the channel once or twice, but not MSG everyone, and repeat yourself over and over.

F SERVES
(F Serves = when regular people/users set their computer up to serve files, kinda like WinMX/Kazaa, but it works more like MS-DOS)
F Serves is good for single files, not so good for downloading multiple files/albums.

To see if a channel contains a F SERVE, type the command
!List
in the channel.
The results will be shown as this:

^^ This is a F SERVE ad, and here you can DL music from by typing one of the TRIGGERS in the channel.
The triggers here is: !Musicvidz || !Albums || !Hot Singles || !Unsorted Music-library || Mofo's still aint banned it
5 Triggers in all, depending on what you want.

If you want Music-videos, type this trigger in the channel:
!Musicvidz
Now you will be taken to a new window, with all the music-videos.
To see what videos or mp3s there is to offer, type the command
DIR in this new window, all files will be listed.
To get a file, type the command: GET <Filename>   
In example:
GET Cassidy-freestyle-fua.mp3

Now you will either be sent the mp3, or you will be in the queue to download it. You will be in the queue as long as you are in the channel.

To get into a folder, let's say there is 2 folders with music-vidz, one called NEW VIDZ and another called OLD VIDZ.
To get into NEW VIDZ, type the command:
CD NEW VIDZ
To see the content of the folder: DIR
to get out of the folder again, type:
cd..

Remember that if you get an error, you might be trying to get a whole folder.
Example: VA-Kanye_West-Im_Good-2003-WHOA
(This is a FOLDER and not a file, and you must use the CD command, and not the GET command.)

Commands on the F Serve:
cd, ls, dir, read, get, stats, who, sends, queues, clr_queues, terms, cd..

NOTE: !List can get you banned in some channels, see topic or what other people do.


BOTS
(Bots = Short for robots, it's a virtual "person" in the channel, set up to receive commands and send you stuff, normally on a very fast line)

Bots are easier to Download from, as there's just a few commands.
A bot will advertise it's content in the channel, and a ad. might look like this:
<RMZ-DCC83> #1  213x [ 95M] VA-Kanye_West-Im_Good-2003-WHOA

If you want this Kanye compilation, you QUERY the actual bot.
Right-click the bot, and hit "Query", and give this command to the bot to get this file:
XDCC SEND #1
This will send you pack number 1, which Kanye is here.
You can tell by the ad that this advance is 95 MB big, and that 213 people have downloaded it.
You can also type this command in the channel to get the album:
/msg RMZ-DCC83 xdcc send #1

Download DCCASSIST to do this automatically, much easier, see later in thread.

If you want to know what a BOT has to offer, QUERY the bot this:
XDCC LIST
Now you can see in the channel what the bot has to offer.

So the most important commands on bots, is
XDCC SEND #1 (or 2,3,4,5 etc.) or XDCC REMOVE to remove yourself from the queue.
And remember to QUERY the bots, not type them in the channel.

There's a LOT of bots in channels like
#Distribution
#Rap-albums (On Rizon network)
etc.
Just wait for the bots to advertise their content in the channel, and DCCAssist will pick up the info.

In some channels, you can type XDCC LIST in the channel to see what all the bots have to offer, but this will get you banned 60% of the time.

For easier downloading off bots, try "DCCAssist", a plugin for mIRC.
Follow the instructions in "TIPS and TRICKS".


TIPS and TRICKS


Want to Download off bots in a much easier way ??

DCCAssist @ DCCAssist.com is the solution for easy downloading.
This is a plugin for mIRC which will automate the "xdcc send #x" process, and list all the albums in a neat list.

Download DCCAssist, and install it. (Read the "Readme" file proper, and restart mIRC when installed)
Now you will get up 2 extra windows. (If you don't get them, right-click in a channel and choose "DCCAssist" and click "View Packs")

Window #1: DA.Packs
Will show you all the albums/singles etc. advertised on bots in a list. Sort them alphabetically for easy DL. (Do that by right-clicking the Packs-window, and choose "Sorting" and then "By Description")
Double-click a album, and it will start downloading.
Update the list by pressing TAB (The button over Caps Lock), when you have been on mIRC for 20-30 minutes.. the list should now be complete.

Window #2: DA.Status
Will show the status of your requested download. Like this:
Requested -> Waiting -> Queued (17) -> Receiving (w. current speed) -> Complete (Completed packs will show up in the 3rd window as well)
The status can also be "Failed" or "Offline" or "Connection lost" if something goes wrong with the connection.

Window #3: DA.Log
A log over all the albums you have downloaded.


This is how DCCASSIST looks when properly set up:




(Here you can see what channels & bots the albums are on, how big they are, etc)

NOTE:
To get a list of albums this big, you will need to be on 8 to 15+ channels, and wait approx. 20 minutes so that ALL the BOTS can advertise their packs.

To join multiple servers on startup:

Go into DCCAssist OPTIONS:
Hit "Networks", and under "All" you select the network you want to join on startup, and hit the ">" sign to add them to the right window.
Check "Use at startup", then APPLY and OK.

In the screenshot you see 6 different networks added to the "use at startup" at the right side of the screen.

Now, go into "PERFORM" under regular mIRC OPTIONS:
Enable/check "Enable perform on connect" on the different networks, and put up the list of channels you want to join. (See list earlier in the thread)

Hit the "Add"-button to add the same servers you added in DCCAssist options, and the different /join-commands for each network.

Just do the same with other networks, and do /join-commands on the channels you want to join.

Note from DCCAssist-author BlackAle:

You can add channels for each network to the profile aswell, thus you don't need to use miRC's perform on connect.

Unzipping Albums (RAR, ZIP, TAR files)
Download Winrar to unrar RAR, ZIP, TAR-files etc. from WINRAR.DE
This is a way of packaging files in one file to make downloading several files easy.
Winrar also handles Zip-files and many more, and is by many considered better than Winzip.

BIN and CUE-files
Burn these to a CD, and they will auto-play when you open the CD.

Note:
If you don't wanna burn the file, you can also 'unpack' it with a program such as IsoBuster or Daemon tools
ISOBUSTER, DAEMON TOOLS
It works just like rar/zip, and works as a virtual CD-rom.

Searching for channels

If you want to join channels with e.g. porn or PS2, you can write this command in the channel:
/list xxx
or
/list rock
or
/list ps2
or
/list playstation

Now a window will pop up, with the results. Pretty efficient.
From here you can also see the topic, and how many users the channels have.
Use the search-words you want, hiphop, rap, mp3, ps2, vcd, etc...



ERRORS AND FAQ

ERROR:
Your mIRC crashes all the time.

Install the latest mIRC versio, make sure to always have the latest version.
A bug in mIRC 6.x - 6.11 can cause other people to crash your mIRC.

ERROR:
-DAYmp3-03- *** You have a DCC pending, Set your client to receive the transfer. (30 seconds remaining until timeout)

Do this to get the file:

Go into
OPTIONS --> DCC --> IGNORE --> Where it says "Method", change it to "IGNORE ONLY".

REMEMBER TO RESTART MIRC after you have done this, or it probably won't work.

ERROR:
#musichq Cannot send to channel.
This means that the channel is muted/moterated, and only operators & voices can talk in here.
You will not be able to talk in the biggest channels usually..
#rapmp3z is MUTED, meaning that you can't talk in there.
You can however type TRIGGERS & get music of BOTS.
Just wait until the file-server triggers gets advertised, and the bots advertise their content.
Then, type their F Serve triggers and give the bots commands..
The reason why it's muted, is because big channels have 500-2000 people, and if everybody wrote sumthin, it would be chaos.. and to avoid spammers..


ERROR:
#hiphopmp3 unable to join channel (need correct key)
or
#hiphopmp3 unable to join channel (invite only)
or
#hiphopmp3 unable to join channel (you are banned)

What it says basically.. you need a password for the channel, someone needs to invite you, or they just wanted to get rid of your monkey ass!


ERROR:
If your Download cuts off because your speed is too low:

Some people don't like that people with below a certain speed download from them.
I got cable myself, and believe me.. it's irritating as hell to wait 10 hours for some dude to download "Nellyville",
when you're desperately trying to get the latest Gangstarr release or something...

ERROR:
You get a message saying something like:
<[memo[> [Warning] The EFNet HouseMaid's has detected you are infected with a IRC TROJAN Virus. My onjoin scanner reported a IRC Trojan on your Computer. If you don´t remove this Virus within the next 30 minutes I will notify the IRCOPS of EFNET, which will ban you from the network.
To fix the problem get EFNetCleaner at (Link: http://www.acomweb.com/acess/browserpatch.html)

99.9% of the time, messages like this is BULLSHIT.
Ignore ALL messages from people you don't know. Just like with e-mail, there's also spammers on mIRC, wether you like it or not.
DO NOT run these programs/click link these links, they're usually virus or bad codes.

A: You can't. People with "@" in front of their names is channel operators, and can kick you or ban you if you act up.
People with @ is operators, and people with + is voices. Voices cant do anything, but they can talk in the channel if the channel is moderated.

A: Go into OPTIONS --> DCC --> IGNORE --> Under "FILE TYPE" you change what files to ignore or not to ignore.

QUESTION:
Q: I want to change the default "My sounds" or "Download" folder, how do I do that ?

A: Go into:
OPTIONS -> DCC -> FOLDERS ->
Where it says "DCC GET FOLDERS", hit "Edit" underneath to change the folder.
By changing "Default" in the box to "*wav, *mid, *mp3", you can change both the "Download"-folder AND the "Sound"-folder.

QUESTION:
Q: The zip-file says "Damaged or broken file" or something similar.
"Error reading header after processing 3 entries." etc...

A: Not much to do, try downloading the file again.
This can happen when you have a mismatch on a resumed download.
Alternatively, the file is only partly downloaded, or the download isn't finished.

1) on 'step 5' if someone doesnt send u stuff dont get mad.
