Police arrested two Vallejo brothers in connection with the double shooting Wednesday of a neighbor and that man's friend, a Sacramento rapper.

Benolter Gambles, 23, and rapper Orindall Jack, 25, were shot at about 11 a.m. Wednesday outside Gambles' apartment in Blue Rock Village in the 2000 block of Ascot Parkway. Police say Gambles had fought there with at least one of the suspects on Tuesday.

Jack's infant daughter was with him at the time of the shooting, but she was not injured, Detective Jason Wentz said.

Jack and Gambles were taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with multiple gunshot wounds. Jack underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition, but Gamble's condition was not available.

Police arrested Gamble's upstairs neighbor, 27-year-old Pierre Smith, after the man turned himself in at police headquarters at about 6:30 p.m., Wentz said.

Hours earlier, police had arrested Smith's brother, 26-year-old Kareem D. Smith, at a residence on Seacrest Drive.

The brothers were booked into Solano County Jail under two counts each of attempted murder. The younger Smith, a parolee convicted of felony assault, also lives in the Blue Rock Village complex but does not share his brother's residence, Wentz said.

Police recovered a handgun they believe the brothers used in the shooting, Wentz said. Detectives also served search warrants on multiple locations in Vallejo, Wentz said, declining to elaborate.

Detectives are still sorting out the nature of the dispute between Gamble and his neighbor, Wentz said, adding that police are not sure how the rapper is involved.

No other suspects are being sought, Wentz said.

At the scene Wednesday morning, investigators marked off evidence around Gambles' white Mercedes-Benz coupe and his girlfriend's silver Lexus coupe parked in a carport in front of the apartment.

Police found the injured men lying near the carport and an adjacent sidewalk. Officers placed markers next to a red hat, brown boot and blue jeans on the sidewalk where one of the victims was treated.

A woman at the scene said she was Gambles' girlfriend and had witnessed the attack. "He just started shooting," the woman said as police escorted her away for questioning. "He was on the floor. They just started beating him."

Neighbors watched as police scanned for clues.

Arnold Barton was decorating his apartment for the holidays with his wife and daughter when they heard about the incident. "It's something to hear this happen in your own complex," Barton said.

Edward Butler, 58, waited for police to let him get to his car, which was parked near where the victims were treated. He said police told him his car was splattered with blood.

"Never in my wildest dreams would I think something like that would happen to either one of them," he said.

Apartment complex managers declined to comment on the shooting.

At the police station, Jack's fiancee picked up their daughter. She declined to comment on the shootings.
