Should 9/11 Be Represented by a National Holiday??
« on: September 11, 2002, 10:12:08 PM »
right now there is a big debate going on... should 9/11 be a National Holiday...

for you who need a defintion... a National Holiday is when the nation allows kids to stay home and not go to school and that business's can get a break from labor...

honestly, I think this would be terrible... sure, the initial idea was to honor those who lost their lives and for those special humans who went a step farther to save others, but if we made it a national holiday I think 9/11 would become like our most famous National Holidays (Memorial and Labor Day)

on both those days, we get off of school and work, and both those days become big PARTY days.... stores and outlet centers have Memorial and Labor day sales... I just can't picture Boston Stores new slogan for their "9/11 Sale" ... people would have bbq's and find ways to enjoy that day for themselves instead of dedicating it to those who suffered on that day... in 18 years we will have thousands of adults who will only know about 9/11 through their history class in High School and those adults will have no significant reason to feel the anguish we do to honor those people, just like most of us don't care about Columbus Day or Martin Luther King Day... or any day that represents something we didn't live through...

9/11 should stay a day we all remember, and a day that should stick in our heads for the rest of our lives, but as the years go on, the significance will become less and less... therefore a day dedicated to such an even will become less important... and if that day is created for a national holiday, it will be used for time to enjoy a day at the mall shopping, than a day to honor the thousands who died last year on September 11th

I won't forget...

I don't think a national holiday is necessary at all. If anything, I think that it should be as regular of a day as possible regarding how the country is run... on a personal level, I think there should and will be a great deal of rememberance, greif, and sorrow for a VERY long time after this event.
