They mean opposite.  But if you break both words down, they basically mean that something is "awe inspiring".  The english language is a motherfucker.

If you say something's awesome, you've judged it as being positive, if you say something's awfull, you've judged it as being negative.

Awful is still derived from the word "awe". The "e" is just dropped. Both words mean to inspire awe, just in a different way.

BTW, the reason it's spelled "awful" and not "awfull" is to keep the 1st syllable stressed. The meaning would be the same as "awfull" if it were to be spelled that way. So Trauma isn't far from being correct.
