They mean opposite.  But if you break both words down, they basically mean that something is "awe inspiring".  The english language is a motherfucker.


No, becase "awe" and "aw" mean two different things...Now if it was spelled "Aweful," that would be a different story, but it's not...



If you say something's awesome, you've judged it as being positive, if you say something's awfull, you've judged it as being negative.

Like I said, it's spelled "awful", not "awfull"...

Awful is still derived from the word "awe". The "e" is just dropped. Both words mean to inspire awe, just in a different way. :)

BTW, the reason it's spelled "awful" and not "awfull" is to keep the 1st syllable stressed. The meaning would be the same as "awfull" if it were to be spelled that way. So Trauma isn't far from being correct.

I'll even go as far to point out that:

awful: 13th century
awe: 13th century

aw: 1852


So how is awful derived from "aw" if the word "aw" wasn't used until 1852? Awful had already been put into use during the 13th century as had the word "awe". I'm sure you're smart enough to make the connection.
