Jail
« on: July 22, 2002, 10:39:01 AM »
what is your guys view on jail.  I think it is very fucked up, and at least 60% of the people doing time should not be in there.  I don't think anyone should get locked up on a drug or alcohol related offence, or for stealing. Rapists, child molesters, wife/child beaters, serial killers all should be locked up.  Most murderers should be locked up too.  I don't have an answer on what we should do, but that shit is fucked up.  Jail is supposed to be a rehabilitation place and shit, but for 90% of the people it just fucks their life up even more.  And then you got the big name celebs that can get away with murder and won't serve any time, but an average person would be put away for many years.  And it is really fucked up when people go to prison for insider trading, or tax evasion and white collar crimes like that.  Fuck jail, fuck the police, and fuck the government.  Like Pac says "I'd rather die than see the penitentiary."

i pretty much agree with you acgrandy, i think jails isn't the answer for a lot of criminals, i think they should build more treatment programs that teaches criminals whats right from wrong, shit like that.

I don't think jail is intended to help those people, thats what rehab centers are for. Jail is a place for punishment. You get your priveleges as a everyday citizen taken away.

Now while your there, you could turn a negative into a positive and change your life around like some people, but for the most part I think jail is there to punish and/or keep people that are menaces from causing more trouble.

The system is very fucked up though, don't get me wrong, but jail is necessary, even for stealing. Without making jail a consequence for stealing, what will stop theives from stealing your shit?

'jail fucks up their lives even more'

yeah, and thats mainly the way they want u to see it, so u'll never wanna go there urself, so in a way, that can be sed as one of the positive sides of thingz.

and, privileges as a citizen are taken away cos outside u didn't wanna stick to the law like citizens shud, so u aint treated like ur a citizen, so i suppose i agree with that too.

and for tax evasion, there are lots of things in ur everyday life that u take for granted that most countries don't have, mainly cos it's funded by the government using your money from taxes, so why shud ppl take advantage of them things wen ur payin for them? it basically boils down to being a kind of steeling from every other citizen in ur state/country, and therefore shud carry the same consequences as steeling, so i do think jail is the answer is jail if u don't pay it off after u have been formely warned, cos if ur over 18 and workin, just rememba that these ppl are basically steeling from u.

there are petty things that they send ppl to jail for tho, sumtimes its really unfair, sumtimes jail really isn't the answer.

I spent a year inside, and it turnt my life around, i was given opportunities that i had initially turned down in the outside world (a decent education, the chance to refind my religion etc), and i met some serious cats, you know, some real evil cunts who scared me and that helped me realise that i had to get my ish straight. So for me it was a pretty sobering experience, one i needed at the time.

But the judicial systems in most countries need revising imo, alot of the time they get the wrong people or straight up let real evil people off and shit, and until these systems are sorted the proposed 'World Court' will never work as it contradicts so many participating countries laws.

For the people that think jail is fair, do you really think people should have to waste years of their lives for a stupid decision or mistake they made.  I don't think humans should have the right to play with peoples lives like that.  You should read about some cases and see how juries can be really unfair.

True, I believe rehabilitation should be attempted first. If the person doesn't want to change then they should get locked up.

I think any crime which does not harm anyone else but the perpetrator, such as drug abuse and fraud, should not meet jail time.
