Curtis Mayfield!!  (rip)    get the superfly soundtrack :)

you might be best off getting some funk/soul comps till you find what you like, there are loads out there.

Kool & The Gang did some good stuff too.. a song called 'NT' (think it means no title) and 'summer madness. (most famously used by premier on "... in deep concentration" and a lil section was used on fresh princes summertime)

Good list. Indeed, great music. Maybe you could also look for albums by:
Chic (for more disco-funk tracks).
James Brown (no further explanation).
Isaac Hayes.
Tower Of Power.
Mandrill.
Mtume.
The only way you can fuck with me, is in a orgy.

Good call Seer. Curtis Mayfield & Kool & The Gang are 2 of my faves.

To the starter of the thread also check out:
Prince
Parliament/Funkadelic
Earth Wind & Fire
The Commodores
Rick James

Most hip-hop is now keyboard driven, because the majority of hip-hop workstations have loops and patches that enable somebody with marginal skills to put tracks together,...

Unfortunately, most hip-hop artists gravitated towards the path of least resistance by relying on these pre-set patches. As a result, electric guitar and real musicians became devalued, and a lot of hip-hop now sounds the same.
