Ras Kass "Soul on ice" - Pre-Release/Demo Review..
« on: August 11, 2002, 04:49:51 AM »

This is a review of the advance/Demo/Pre-Release version of soul on ice. None of these tracks are available in CDQ but all are very good and if these tracks were added to the released verion of Soul On ice, it would have made the album only better...

1) Everything I Love.
The track starts off with some old music playing, kinda like one of ras's tracks called "Jack Frost" (which was taken off the released version of soul on ice). The beat kicks in which is very laid back. Ras rips this track up with some great lyrics and theres a nice hook to

"I watch the sunset west,
with a v s on my chest, contemplating milk
while between 2 breasts"

Great track and a nice start to the album
Rating - 5/5

2) Core Audience
Before there was "Nature of the Threat", "TV Guide" and "interview..." there was this, his first epic track. This track is AMAZING and is ras telling you about the music industry and how the artist gets fucked by the label, the label gets fucked by the promoters and so forth And how he only makes music for the core audience and fuck everyone else.

"Nigga's always reminis about the old skool days in the park
but the truth is hip hop was fucked from the start"

3) High IQ
Cool little intro with someone talking about What is the most important part of the body. The beat comes in hard with ras coming out with some frighteningly tight lyrics. HE covers loads of topics from, the music industry, keeping it real and other things. The only downside of this track is its short (unless i don't have the complete track)
Rating - 4.5/5

4) Won't Catch Me Running
HAhahha this track starts off with some funny music almost if it was lifted from an old porn film. BUT when the tracks starts, My god another great track. Ras talking about his experiences in the streets and how its a hard life.
Rating - 5/5

5) Capital R.A.S
EXCELLENT track about what ras is about and what goes on around him and also touches on Ras's fav topic. Racism.
Rating 5/5

6) Blood is Thicker Than Water.
Women Hums over this dark beat which sounds deadly. Ras talking about many topics including how blacks should stick together but ultimately they don't .

"A nigga ain't your homie coz he knows your slave name"
Rating - 5/5

7) Interlude
Over 3 minutes of calm relaxing music, no rapping but a vioce talking every now and then for a few seconds.
Rating 4/5

8} Take A Deep Breathe
Theres a guest on this track but i have no idea who it is but they do very well. Just a track about ras and the other guy being better than other MCs. Track has a great calm beat accompanied by tight lyrics by ras.
Rating - 4/5

9) Remain Anonymous
Good shit, nice beat and ras tares up lyrically.

"Cause what nigga got props in the industry don't really interest me, My motto is: the bigger they are, the more politics involved
And I revolve at a rate to make your occipital skull plate dissolve Techniques delve deep.."

"what it boils down to is the "yes yes y'all," and only that makes a rapper great.
Fuck rhetoric and repertoire, demographics and heavy rotation
Slowly the lyrication makes sense
Fuck fame; I snuff that ass out the frame
It ain't Snoop Dogg, so what's my motherfuckin name?
"The arra-arra-R, A, ella-ella-S"
Rating - 5/5

10) Take A Deep Breathe (Remix)
This has the same guest as the original version but they have new verses and this track has a new beat to eat. I prefer this version to the original and again ras rips this.
Rating 4.5/5

11) Walk the Walk
calm track which ras rips up, talking about the path you choose will decide your fate and will make u or break u. Very good track.
Rating - 4.5/5

Conclusion.
This album is amazing, and its a shame many of these tracks never made the final cut and get put on "Soul On Ice" coz many of these tracks are equally as good and if not better than some tracks on soul on ice. This version has the exact feel of soul on ice and has the same style of beats and equally as good lyrics. Put simply if you like soul on ice you will love this. The only flaw with this version is not to do with the album it self but the quality, i have all the tracks in full but all are average quality and at times lyrics are hard to decipher.
Overall this is easily as good as soul on ice, but the released version is better. As it stands this is the only thing he has done which will ever complete with soul on ice and if this is ever fully released in CDQ it may equal it.

Overall - 5/5
