Styles - A Gangsta and a Gentleman
« on: June 20, 2002, 05:04:31 AM »
1 Intro
Dope intro with Styles talkin over a eerie background.

2 Good Times
Dope beat by Swizz Beatz, and a classic chorus in best Kanye West style. Styles rips it.
5 of 5

3 Yall Know We In Here Ft Swizz  Beatz n P.K.
P.K. beat, pretty dope.
Styles reps agressive, with Swizz & P.K. on the chorus.
Sounds like a RR-theme.
4.5 of 5

4 A Gangster And A Gentleman
This is fucking dope, Alchemist on the beat. Beat is incredible, and Styles str8 rips it, telling his lifestory.
Dope chorus too. By this track the album is already doper that Jadakiss album.
5 of 5

5 Black Magic Ft Angie Stone
A more laidback soulful track.
Pretty nice.
Angie Stone makes a nice cameo on the chorus.
Alchemist on the beat again, but a little too slow for me.
4 of 5

6 Daddy Get That Cash Ft Lil Mo
Hype beat, by Rockwilder
Swizz proves himself once again. The chorus fits the beat perfect. Styles comes thru once again.
4.75 of 5

7 Lick Shots Ft Jadakiss Sheek n J-Hood
Once again a dope Swizz Beatz beat. Reminds me of "Eastside Ryders" with Styles & Eastsidaz. Gunshots throughout the song gets a lil irritating though, but still dope.
Lox younging J Hood makes a aight verse nuthin special.
Sheek proves himself a righteous Lox-member. Kiss comes correct as always.
4.75 of 5

8 And I Came To Ft Eve n Sheek
Swizz Beatz AGAIN, and it's hype as fuck once again.
Sheek comes dope, and so does Styles & Eve
Average chorus, but can't ruin a dope beat & joint.
4.5 of 5

9 Get Paid
Beats is sweet on this album so far, and this is no exception.
Difficult to hear who's on the beat.
Styles tells the story about getting paid.
Children singing on the chorus.
Pretty aight shit.
4.25 of 5

10 Ass Bag (Skit)

11 I'm A RuffRyder Ft Jadakiss
Simple but efficient beat.
Styles & Kiss reppin that Dub R.
Very Anthemish.
4.5 of 5

12 Soul Clap
Sounds like it could be Rockwilder, and it's dope as fire in hell.
Styles rips it AGAIN, and the chorus is DOPE as fuck!
"Can I get a soul-clap?" Styles says on the chorus, and after this you hear a gun reloading. Very dope.
5 of 5

13 We Thugs (My Niggas) Ft  Jadakiss n Sheek
Once again a D Block joint. Kiss & Styles switches verses perfect, NICE mic-switching indeed.
Beat is dope here too, if you didn't know.
4.5 of 5

14 Styles Ft Jadakiss
Hm, strange name for a track, but you'll see when you hear the chorus.
Just above average beat, but when Styles comes dope and Kiss does a dope chorus, the outcome is pretty aight.
Pretty unSwizzish but I guess it's him again.
4.25 of 5

15 Barbershop (Skit)

16 Listen
A laidback track, and Styles dropping some thoughtful lyrics.
Laidback shit isn't my cup of tea, but delivered like this, I don't mind.
4.5 of 5

17 Niggas Flippin (Skit)

18 Yall Dont Wanna Fuck Ft M.O.P.
You KNOW Jome likes a MOP-cameo, and both Fame & Danze str8 rip it in their own ultra-amped style.
Hype beat, provided by Tuneheadz, hmm...
One of the more amped tracks on the album, unsurprisingly.
5 of 5

19 Shit Done Changed (Skit) Ft  Styles n Garf

20 Nobody Believes Me Ft Sheek, Cross n J-Hood
Nice story-driven track, with each character playing a part of the story. The beat encourages the story and it ends up pretty dope. Styles is the main character, with the other RR's in supporting roles.
4.5 of 5

21 Dedication (Skit) Ft Styles

22 My Brother
A laidback track, with life-reflectiving lyrics.
Not very dope, but easy to listen to, and nice lyrics.
4 of 5

23 Outro Ft Styles
Dope outro

24 The Life (Bonus Track)  feat. Pharoahe Monch
CLASSIC track.
Perfect joint, fuck complaining about anything on this one.
5 of 5

Total: 8.5 of 10

Anybody else wanna review this?
I have the feeling that this will go into history as yet another classic debut-album.
I wanna see some other views on it.

1. Intro

2. Good Times  5/5 (would love to see a remix with some other heavy smokers like snoop or meth... 8) )

3. Y'all Know We In Here  3.5/5
Styles comes nice, but i'm not feeling the beat that much, but still a good song...

4. A Gangster And A Gentleman  5/5
best track on the album, tight ass beat by Alchemist, dope chorus + styles rips it...

5. Black Magic  4/5
nice, smooth track, angie stone on the chorus... :)

6. Daddy Get That Cash  4/5
tight beat again, but styles can do it better imo...

7. Lick Shots  3/5
those gunshots ruin the song, the LOX all come correct, but they could've left out j hood ...

8. And I Came To  3/5
average beat, gets kinda repetitive, styles & sheek are nice on this one, i'm not feeling eve tho...

9. Get Paid  4/5
nice beat, styles is dope + plus a tight chorus...

10. Skit

11. I'm A Ruff Ryder  4/5
another dope beat (who produced this?), styles & jada rip it, kinda like an anthem for the RR...

12. Soul Clap  4/5
grimey beat, the chorus with the gun reloading is dope...

13. We Thugs (My Niggaz)  3.5/5
another LOX joint (and they are all dope again), but the beat makes the song kinda average, doesn't have that much power...

14. Styles  3/5
nothin special, styles and jada are solid, the beat too...

15. Skit

16. Listen  4/5
styles comes tight, dropping some deep lyrics, nice laidback beat, i'm feelin this one...

17. Skit

18. Y'all Dont Wanna Fuck  4.5/5
ya know, if there's MOP on the track, thats gonna be hype...MOP outshine Styles on this one, but definitely a dope ass song...

19. Skit

20. Nobody Believes Me  4/5
nice concept on this one, some storytellin, seems kinda funny (dunno if this was intended...), beat is kept in the background, fits well with the story...

21. Skit

22. My Brother  4.5/5
styles again showing his gentleman side, deep lyrics, as Jome said 'life-reflecting'...

23. Outro

24. The Life  5/5
i love this song, the chorus done by pharoahe is dope as fucc, and styles rips it again...

Overall: 4/5, one of the best releases in 2002 so far...definitely better than Jada's album (which was a big disappointment to me), tho i wouldn't consider it a classic...

Isn't Sheek supposed to drop an album this year???

VERY good album, surprisingly.

why surprisingly?
Styles is dope as fuck
Shoot'em in Tha Head is at least as good as the best tracks of this album.
And Swizz Beatz is a good producer.

Because RR is known to put out albums with variable results, and many saw Jada's album more likely to succeed than Styles.

In my opinion Styles is defently betta than Jada so I expected more from his album than from Jada's and Ruff Ryders never released an album with no dope tracks.
Personally I expected Styles' album to be as good as it is.

I agree.
The album's filled with killah joints.. the only way to improve it, is to put "Shoot em in the head", and one of the I get high remixes on there, and remove some skits.
