Kokane – Funk Upon a Rhyme

1. Intro
2. Ridin’ the funk…There’s really no rapping here.  It’s Kokane talking in between choruses.  The wailing in the background is a nice touch and the hook is very catchy.  5/5
3. From the funk to the bottom…Production is a quick bassline and a high-pitched squealing.  Kokane raps the verses and does the hook with the help of Cold 187.  4.5/5
4. Mo water…Funky beat.  Flowin’ lyrics.  Good hook.  4/5
5. Slow burnin’ 22.5 Fahrenheit…A different, unique weed song.  Smooth beat and tight lyrics with a gangsta feel.  5/5
6. I need representation…A slow tempo track.  Kokane spits the verses in his own style instead of rapping here.  A mix of rap, funk, R&B.  4.5/5
7. My day is coming…A song about reflecting about the past mistakes.  Nice intro, deep lyrics, with an A+ hook.  5/5
8. All bark, no bite…Featuring the Alkaholiks.  Tight gangsta/G-funk beat.  4/5
9. Bakin’ soda free…The hook makes this song.  The rest of the lyrics are tight, but the chorus fits perfectly with the beat.  5/5
10.   Aftermath…A rather long song but a nice mix of a piano on a gangsta track.  A rare appearance by Shaki (Dirty Red).  Features Above the Law also.  4/5
11.   No pain, no gain…A deep, emotional song.  Perfect chorus and great lyrics.  Best song on the album.  5/5
12.   Funkinmuffin…A regae sounding track.  Kokane really changes his voice up in this one.  This track is really worth skipping every time.  1.5/5
13.   Shots out…Really just an interlude, but it’s got a funky beat.
14.   Shit, goddamn…The beat gets repetitive and the lyrics.  The CD could have done without this track.  2/5
15.   Don’t bite the phunk…A diss to Death Row featuring Cold 187 and Kokane.  Quality production and tight lyrics.  Very long song.  5/5

OVERALL…9/10

Kokane was definitely ahead of his time with this album.  His style is so much different from other rappers, especially here because it came out in 1994.  His mix of rapping and singing fits well with the A+ production by Cold 187.  Only 2 songs to skip.  Every other one can play from beginning to end.  A classic album.

Damn homie nice reviews, we needes somebody to get this section crackin'.

This cd is pure classic. Some people don't feel Kokane at all. Iam not one of them. Kokane has a funkified style and this cd is truly his best with the funky G-Funk production by Cold 187um

I really like this album! It might even be Kokane's best work although his first album wasn't that bad too. Nice review!

I was looking through some of my older reviews and had to pull this one up again.  I don't use the 10 scale anymore, so I give it a 4.5/5.

I don't use the 10 scale anymore, so I give it a 4.5/5.

The 10 scale is better then the 5 scale...

0/10        =       0/5

0.5/10     =        0.25/5

1/10        =       0.5/5

1.5/10      =      1.75/5

2/10    =      1/5

2.5/10     =     1.25/5

3/10         =     1.5/5

3.5/10     =      1.75/5

4/10     =      2/5

4.5/10     =    2.25/5

5/10      =     2.5/5

5.5/10     =       2.75/5

6/10      =      3/5

6.5/10      =        3.25/5

7.0/10       =       3.5/5

7.5/10    =       3.75/5

8/10       =       4/5

8.5/10     =      4.25/5

9/10      =      4.5/5

9.5/10     =      4.75/5

10/10       =       5/5

On the 10 scale  you have like for example 5.25 or 5.75 while the 5 scale you cant cuz whats half of 25 is 12.5 and 75 is 37.5 which is a more complicated rating. So basically the 10 scale is easier and simpler.

IMO, the 5 scale is easier and you get a better feel...just my opinion.

I just heard Nickel Slick Nigga (which is a fantastic song) and I feel I'm gonna like this album very much.

Kokane was DEFINATELY ahead of his self at this time. To think that the man was only 23 years old when recording this record, and made it without any bullshit "gangsta" stuff is just amazing. That's something that most rapper cant even boast about to this day.

His new record Pain Killer'z is damn-near just as good yall, go get that!!!
