Check it
I was inspired to do a lil review meself:

1 Grand opening (Interlude)
A nice mellow beat, but pretty straight forward, and no rapping or talking whatsoever, a average intro.
3.5 of 5

2 At the speed of life
"Listen you fuckers" it begins with a sampled voice from a movie. This is a true classic, with a hard beat provided by Thayod, a
Alkaholik-affiliated producer, in my opinion a very underrated producer. Xzibits shines throughout the track with lyrics like:
"It took a long time comin but we waited
Xzibit went from underated
To now most antcipaded
never would of thought that I would rock your set"
5 of 5

3 Just maintain
A average beat from E-Swift by his standards, and if you, like me, cant stand the voice of female Mc Hurricane G, then its not the track for you.
3 of 5

4 Eyes may shine
A dope beat from E-Swift where he samples Mobb Deep, and Xzibit comes nice spittin:
"Only death disease and a whole lota palm trees
Not only for mics, Xzibit is a way of life
Until my death so I celebrate success"
4.5 of 5

5 Positively negative ft. King Tee
A old-school vs. new-school joint with good ol' King Tee. The beat will grow on you, but it's a lil weird, made by Craig Sherrard. King Tipsy & Xzibit is a good combo, and overall a nice track. Xzibit spits:
"Ladies and gentlemen
Undivided attention
Xzibit get you open like Nicole Brown Simpson"
4 of 5

6 Dont hate me (Interlude)
A good interlude with Xzibit speaking over a good laidback beat.
"I'd like to say a shoutout, but I aint got nobody to say 'em to"
4 of 5

7 Paparazzi
Classic shit right here, and once again it's Thayod that laces the beat. A musthear, Xzibit spits tight again:
"Sometimes I wonder if it's all worth my while
Xzibit stay versitile
with Million Dollar lifestyle
and I can feel it as a child growin' up
the niggaz that were real and the niggaz that were scared as fuck
that's why Xzibit only roll with a chosen few
You ain't really real, I can tell when I look at yo"
5 of 5

8 The foundation
Produced by none other than Cypress Hill's DJ Muggs.
Usually I dont like songs dedicated to a son or whatever, but this is a very tight joint, and changes the mood on the album, with Muggs actually playin piano, and a choir providin a very moody track. Once again XZ shows his caliber as an MC:
"You are the foundation
Begining of a new generation
I remember hospital hallway pacin'
I was anxious as fuck to see your face shine
Only to find that yours looked like mine
So it's like I'm livin' twice at the exact same time
In this life you can't press stop
Then press rewind"
4.75 of 5

9 Mrs. Crabtree (Interlude)
Nothin special.
2 of 5

10 Bird's eye view
A good beat by Diamond D, and this tracks is blessed by Tash & J-Ro, but also the irritating Hurricane G sneaks into the track, alltough she aint credited. If you like tha Liks, you probably gon like this track. Tash spittin funny as always:
"Cause I drop the lyrics on you
From beneath the Earth's surface
Where I write rhymes so fresh
I try to bite my own verses"
4.25 of 5

11 Hit & Run (Part 2)
A ok interlude-alike track, with a good grimey beat.
But you know XZ can do better than this.
3 of 5

12 Carry the weight
Thayod comes through with a very good beat again, and Xzibit spits excellent again. Classic shit, and also this track also has a marvellous chorus:
"And niggas wonder why I sit up in the club and drink
Say what's up to Xzibit and I still don't speak
I'm trying to contemplate the next move to make
Gotta find some way, Xzibit carry the weight"
5 of 5

13 Plastic surgery
Another "family-track" this time with his Golden State-buddys Saafir & Ras Kass. This tracks reminds me how much E-Swift has improved since this album was made. A little chaotic track, with no real structure, but you got good elements thrown in: Ras Kass's funny hi-tec metaphores, Xzibits over the top-delivery and also you got Saafir, here sounding like he's trying to impersonate a computer. Not my cup of tea, but ok.
3.25 of 5

14 Enemies & Friends
DJ Pen One on a nice beat, Xzibit shines, spitting:
"I got the right shit
For all the wrong reasons
As long as I breathin'
Niggas change like seasons
Never trust a man
Who can't look you in your eyes
Only the strong survive
And that's word to the wise"
And also:
"Xzibit easily dispersed like crack cocaine
See I lent my shotgun to Kurt Cobain
And the motherfucker never brought it back
Ahh, that's wack"
4.25 of 5

15 Last words (Interlude)
See intro, same shit

Total album:
Beats 4.25 of 5
Lyrics 4.5 of 5
Total 4.5 of 5

Remember, this is by todays standards, back when it was released I also thought it was a classic, but most of the material still holds, though some of the tracks sound dated.

Bump

And if a 0.25 difference in one song is the only complaint, then I'm pretty happy with my review.

Take in mind that this review was written 18 jan. 2002
and not in 1996, when it came out.
I have heard every Xzibit-verse there is, and he definately didn't use his full potential in some of these songs.
Also, back then I would probably give it 5 too, but 4.5 is by todays standards.

i've had this album for damn near 5 years now and it sounds just as good as it ever has and just becuase he doesn't use his full potential on it doesn't mean it can't be considered  classic,he delivered better than 99% of the rappers out then and now,  hell dre didn't use his full potential on Straight outta Compton but that's one of the greatest albums ever in hip hop
