Review Of NAS- Stillmatic......peep it!
« on: December 07, 2001, 10:16:28 AM »
First of all, i know peeps are dying for this to be better than The Blueprint, and i really want(ed) it to be too.  Well, i have to say this album is very different than Jay Z's album, and much more innovative.  Whereas Jay's album was all samples and a lot of the songs used the same concepts, Stillmatic has a lot of different themes and sounds on here.  The result is that the album is not nearly as cohesive as Jay Z's album, it just doesn't flow as well.
However, i am not saying this album is not as good as the Blueprint, it is just totally and completely different!  Just as Jay and NAs are totally and completely different!
Furthermore, peeps are expecting this album to be a classic, whereas Jays album just snuck up and surprised everyone after his previous 2nd rate efforts.  You are probably wondering why i keep talking about Jay Z, right?  Well, i will stop it then and focus on Nas' album.....

1. Intro- the best intro of the year, and it has possibly the best beat on the entire album!  Nas talks, spits a little, then talks again.  You must hear this... 5/5

2. Ether- on this track here, Nas lyrically destroys Jay Z, far surpassing the Jays disses on Takeover.  However, the beat is not quite as hard as Takeover, and therefore the lyrics don't quite hit as hard.  To the average listener, Jay wins, but once you really peep what Nas is saying, you know what time it is..... 4.5/5

3. Got Yourself a Gun- Well, this song has the video that is gonna get a lot of play, a beat that is hype, a catchy chorus, and Nas spitting some nice (albeit watered down) lyrics.  A very nie first single..... 4.5/5

4. Everybody's Crazy- This track is kinda hypnotizing to say the least.  I never liked it on the promo, but now it is alright.  This track was previously called SMOKING by the way, most of you probably heard it.....3/5

5. You're the Man- My favourite song of the year, and their has been a lot of great songs this year (i think this has been raps best year since 94).  The track by Large Professor (who did a lot of Nas' debut) is incredible, there is a nice sample for the chorus, and Nas is at his best on this track.....describing his life since he entered the rap game....I LOVE THIS SONG!
        5/5

6. Rewind- Nas actually tells this story backwords; to be honest, i am not sure what the song is about yet, but the idea itself makes the song DOPE!  Only Nas could do this shit, you gotta hear it to believe it.  "Hung up the phone then the phone ring"
4.5/5

7.  One Mic- Great song, it starts off slow, then gets crazy fast, i am sure most of ya'll heard this.  Quite an innovative track again, this album is looking incredible so far. 5/5

8.  2nd Childhood- This shit sounds straight from Nas early days, so that means it is great.....4.5/5

9.  Destro and Rebuild- This song disses Cormega and Nature, and is basically about Nas' hood.....it isn't bad, the beat grows on you too..  He also says he got love 4 Prodigy, despite MTV saying that NAs dissed him on this. 4.5/5

10. The Flyest- this features Az, and they both come nice on this track.  However, this song features a wack chorus.  3.5/5, only cuz i had such high expectations for this

11.  Braveheart Party- prod. by Swizz Beats, ft. Bravehearts, this is supposes to be a party track.  Admittedly, it is not bad but it does not fit the album AT ALL..   3/5

12. Rule- boasting a sample that would make Puffy proud, this track straoght jacks the 80's song Everybody Want to Rule.......and it is DOPE!  This song is gonna be huge, i guarantee.  It is a Trackmasters joint, and well a little corny, it is as good as a commercial joint can get. Nas is awesome on it too, this is gonna be huge.   5/5

13. My Country- Nas sings on this one, and only gets one verse.  The beat is not bad, and the subject matter is dope, but overall this is just average.  3/5

14. Poison- Nas is rapping about different types of poison on this song, over a really nice track.  Very nice track, 4.5/5

15. Every Ghetto- This track is not bad for a bonus cut......the beat is nice, kinda soft (like a lot of production on this cd), but this is still a good track. 3.5/5

Well, i am not disappointed overall.  Nas has thrown something in from everone of his previous cd's to make this one, and added some new shit.  The cd is a meshing of styles, not a clone of Illmatic.  It doesn't matter though, Nas is Stillmatic when he wants to be, and he has a GREAT cd on his hands.  This is probably my second fav. of the year (behind Warren) despite the weak tracks, becasue the good tacks are way better than anyone else's this year.
Nas is gonna get 4/5 in the Source guaranteed.  From Vibe, Nas might get 1/5 (who knows about them), and from me, .....i dont know what to give him.  I am the same guy who said The BLueprint was 5, even though i don't like Jay Z as much as Nas.  Well, with this cd, Nas proves he is better than Jay Z on the mic, but he didn't make as good an album overall.

Stillmatic=   4.5/5

Yay... what a good week for music.

should i have posted this in the stillmatic thread? im confuzzled.

01  2:11   Intro   9/10
02  4:37   Ether  10/10
03  3:48   Got Yourself A Gun 9/10
04  3:47   Everybodys Crazy  8/10
05  3:26   Youre The Man  10/10
06  2:13   Rewind 9/10
07  4:28   One Mic 10/10
08  3:51   2nd Childhood 9/10
09  5:24   Destroy And Rebuild 8/10
10  4:38   The Flyest 7/10
11  3:43   Braveheart Party  3/10 (generous.)
12  4:32   Rule 8/10
13  5:12   My Country 8/10
14  4:59   Poison 7/10
15  3:38   Every Ghetto (Bonus) 7/10

well since some of you dont like the promo i dunno if you'll dig the album.....

the Intro has a dope beat... i forget the production credits but i believe they're in the other thread.... "the brothers stillmatic, i crawled up outta that grave, wipin that dirt, cleanin my shirt, they thought i'd make another illmatic, but its always forward i'm movin, never backwards here's another classic, c-notes is fallin from the sky, by now the credits roll the starring nas executive poet, produced directed by, the kid slash escobar, narration describe the lives of lost tribes in the ghetto tryin to survive"....

"Ether" is the return shot at Jay-Z.... imo this kills Takeover.. lyrics are posted in the other thread.

"Got Yourself A Gun" ... dope choice as a first single in my opinion... i read that they crafted the beat around Nas's vocals.. which is cool... this was the track that got me hyped for the album... i didnt feel the original Stillmatic track.. thankfully they left it off.

"Everybodys Crazy"  production is decent not incredible... i like the semi-whispered hook.  Nas sounds good... no complaints about the album so far.

"You're Da Man" .... the production on this song :hat !!!!! that means smokin btw :o
i love the drums and violins... as well as the vocal sample... Nas spits hard on this shiet.

"Rewind" is some crazy shit... Nas tells a story b

Your opinion.  But if No Limit was as irrelevant as youd want to believe you wouldnt constantly dwell on them and give them all this publicity. Give it  up--I am done talking about No Limit.  I like them , you dont.  Fine-we all have opinions..this thread was about Nas and not No Limit-which shows how out of control your posting has become.

I havent heard the album, but if Braveheart Party is the only wack track, and the rest range from good-classic, the album should get 5 mics. I dont think one wack track can bring an album down half a mic.
