^^ Is it THAT EASY to get fired in the States.. ??
Who said anything about the government, nobody blamed Bush yet.. ? lol

^ Freedom of speech only applies when dealing with the government.  She was on private property, and therefore had no freedom of speech.

this is like arguing why you don't hear westcoast rappers on the radio. is that censorship too? is the government holding back their freedom of speech? afraid not

like someone said, she's a singer. i don't go to concerts to here the political ramblings of a singer i go for the music. that's like going to a Dentist and he tries to evaluate your mental state.

I said she was censored, and she was..
You don't have to be censored by the government to be censored.

So, people countering your opinion with their own, differing, opinion and speaking with their check books is censorship? Nope. It's not censorship just because you misread your audience.  When the GOVERNMENT says you can't do something under penalty of law, that's censorship. When private actors level sanctions/boycotts against other private actors, that's freedom of association.

Censorship is the use of state or group power to control freedom of expression. Censorship 'criminalizes' certain actions or the communication of such actions - or suggested communications of such actions.

Ok Engel, let's draw the line between 2 different things.

Quote
cen·sor·ship    ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (snsr-shp)
n.
   1. The act, process, or practice of censoring.
-------
censoring
A person authorized to examine books, films, or other material and to remove or suppress what is considered morally, politically, or otherwise objectionable.

^^ This is the case of Linda Ronstadt being pulled off stage.
She was being c-e-n-s-o-r-e-d.

Quote
Main Entry: freedom of speech
: the right to express information, ideas, and opinions free of government restrictions based on content and subject only to reasonable limitations (as the power of the government to avoid a clear and present danger) esp. as guaranteed by the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution

Obviously, since this is a U.S. dictionary, the term "freedom of speech" is defined different in U.S. than in other countries.
It's written in the constitution, so this was not the case in Linda's case.

Comprende.. ?
When MTV removes cuss-words or political opinions like Jada's line, it's censorship.
If NBC had removed Janet's titty from the screen or blanked it out, it's censorship.
You do NOT have to the government to be able to censor something, bottom line.

Censorship is the use of state or group power to control freedom of expression.

Get a better dictionary.
And don't forget to post up the other meanings of the word as well.

These past two days you've been on a real Anti-American binge. When did you become so close minded?

You are wrong. Ask any college professor what censorship is and they will give you the definition of what I just said. Nobody's freedom of speech was infrigned on. Nobody was censored.

What is anti-American about defining the word "censored".. ??
You need to draw the line between "freedom of speech" and "censoring", I already did it for you.

See.. ?
What does America and the government have to do with this.. ??
If she was pulled off stage in Norway for the same reasons, I would still call it "censoring" !!

she wasn't censored...people heard what she had to say and they didn't agree with it.....next time you see a bunch of hispanics...say "go fuck yourself you spics"

you got the freedom to say that but you will also get a nasty response out of them

i agree with Jome - according to the definition of censorship, the hotel would have been censoring - if they actually did anything. sounds like the story has been exaggerated and the hotel never escorted her like a common criminal, i just read this:

Singer Linda Ronstadt says that she will continue to urge her audiences to see Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 despite the uproar that ensued when she did so Saturday night at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas. In an interview with today's (Wednesday) Los Angeles Times, which described her as "a longtime liberal activist," Ronstadt said that she has been making her remarks about the Moore film at every concert and each time drawing a mixture of hisses and hurrahs. "I've done this all across the country, and I'm telling you, it's like my independent poll. I have never seen a [polarized] reaction like this in all my years of touring." Ronstadt also told the Times that reports that the Aladdin management threw her out of the building after her performance were exaggerated. "They didn't throw me out. I didn't even know there was trouble. I didn't know they were mad," she said.

how is it censorship when she was able to say what she wanted to say, and she's still able to say what she wants to say at future concerts?
