ok check this out, i could be a total idiot, but tell me the answer to this

"Mike was on the ground, John picked up his suitcase."


whos suitcase did john pick up, Mikes or his own???

is this a flaw in the english language.

it is supposed to be determined buy preceding or following sentences

there's no way of telloing who the possessive pronoun is related to. hence it could be either person's suitcase

I asked him his name he said he was john, and he was picking up mike suitcase
