Organization Plans To Boycott Snoop Dogg

September 30, 2002-- A Chicago-based activist group, Project Islamic Hope, plans to announce a boycott of rapper Snoop Dogg today, protesting the rapper's visibility in several business and entertainment endeavors. According to EURweb.com, the group is planning a press conference today in Chicago, which will detail the protest.

"We strongly believe that Snoop Dogg gangsta rap music has always glorified gang violence, drug use, and misogyny and that should not be supported," Najee Ali, Director of the organization, said in a statement. "His recent appearance in porno videos by Hustler is immoral."

Ali is also demanding that Macy's department stores remove the rapper's clothing line, Snoop Dogg Clothing, from all stores. If Macy's doesn't cooperate, they too will be boycotted.

Snoop is slated to appear in a Muppet Christmas Special later this year, but Ali is demanding the rapper's segment be removed from the show, which is marketed to young children.

Continuing, he said, "We will not support a porno star (Snoop Dogg) working on projects that influence children. Any sponsor that supports the Muppets Show starring Snoop Dogg will also be targeted. Protests outside of NBC Studios and Macy's will begin next week."

In a previous interview with BET.com, Snoop maintained that his life has changed and even admitted to having been a poor role model for children. He recently ended a long-term habit of smoking marijuana and said he fully intents to be an example of how one can change his/her life.

"I been leading niggas off the cliff for 5-6 years. Driving the car with a gang of niggas [like], 'C'mon, let's go,'" he said as he imitated the sound of a car going over a cliff.

"You are only given so much time in this life, so you must do what you must do while you are here. And I'm gonna do what I'm supposed to do while I am here," he concluded.

In addition, he said he altered his lifestyle in order to properly handle his responsibilities as a man and blossoming entrepreneur.

"I'm 30 years old now. Three kids, a wife, a mom, brothers, artists, family, friends. - they all need me. They depend on me," he said.  

In related news, Bill O'Reilly of Fox's "The O'Reilly Factor" also has questioned Snoop's appearance in the Muppets special.

"What the heck is rapper Snoop Dogg doing in a Muppet Christmas special? Should a guy who has also been in porn films, was recently cleared of a murder charge and has a past filled with violence, really be appearing in a program designed for little kids?" he wondered in a statement on his website.

At press time, Snoop was unavailable for comment regarding the protest against him.

The Long Beach rapper released Snoop Dogg : Doggy Style Allstars Vol. 1 this summer and will release his seventh solo album, Paid Da Cost To Be Da Boss, on November 19.
