Gunmen seize Russian school

MOSCOW, Russia (Reuters) -- Armed attackers on Wednesday took at least 200 schoolchildren hostage in the southern Russian province of North Ossetia, Itar-Tass news agency quoted local officials as saying.

Interfax news agency quoted local police as saying women and men wearing belts of explosives were among the attackers in the Ossetian town of Bislan, not far from the rebel province of Chechnya.

A gunbattle broke out with police near the building after the assault on the school. It said at least one man had been killed in the shootout.

The agency said the gunmen may also have attacked a second school, but other agencies did not confirm this.

The gunmen staged their attack on the first day of the new school year.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's envoy in the region said: "At the moment police are being called to the scene. It is not immediately clear how many schoolchildren and parents have been taken.

"There is a shootout in the area," the envoy, Vladimir Yakovlev said.

I dont know much about russia, so give me some space.

Well here's the situation. Chechnyian (cant spell that) terrorists took a hold of a school in russia. There reasons behind it are "Get out of chechnia, and release prisoners." My thoughts go both ways.

I can understand that they want russian military out of their country (its a country right?), so i kind of feel for them, i wouldnt want an army from a different country in my country.

Terrorism has got to be the worst way to get your point across. How can these people think that holding a school hostage is a way to get your point across?

The minute they took children hostage, they lost any respect, or taking anyone hostage for that matter. I just dont understand how some people could do this kind of thing.

^^^yup I heard it was the type of gas they use with cancer patients that are in the last stages and the pain is so great that even morphine can't ease the pain , so u can imagine what it could do to a normal health person

I dunno the whole story & history of the Russian/Chechnyan war. Shit is crazy man. Saw this yesterday morning on BBC. Parents holding up white cloths, trying to get into the school, heard one was shot trying to do juss that. Blaming Black Widows or something.

they actually had a shot to wake everyone up, but there wasn't enough nurse/docters to give the shot..so that's basically why most of them died
