Four out of five people want the legal smoking age to be raised from 16 to 18 to deter young people from taking up the habit, a BBC poll suggests.

I totally agree with this i think the italians have got it right, smoking age = 18 drinking age = 16 we have it the opposite way round. when i was 14 i rarely had trouble buying ciggarettes, i think people start too young and they often carry on that habbit and not to mention the waste of money it is. oh and by the way this is coming from a smoker i have been on and off since about the age of 13/14 and i can't shake it now i'm almost 21.

 In Canada it's 19 for smoking and drinking. 16 is way too young to drink, or smoke. I do neither but that's a personal choice. If 16 year olds want to do either it is still easily accesible but to publicly condone it is just stupid. Here all the 13 to 16 year olds think it's cool to be over 19 so they can legally do all that stuff so they do it. If the age was 16 then you'd see all the 10-13 year olds doing it, and that would be ridiculous.

as it stands now shops cant tell because kids coming towards the end of school can legally buy ciggies

as it was harder to get booze..

I think 18 should be the legal age for drinking and smoking.

Thats about the time that people (most) are either almost done with or finished high school.

it will stop what,  maybe 5% of those kids who were goin smoke from smokin.  In the states its 18 to smoke.  By the time i was in my junior/senior year in high school half the class smoked an 90% of them were under 18 so it really doesnt matter.   Your still goin find your bodega's that will sell ciggs an liquor to a 12 year old.  Your still goin have parents that buy there kids ciggs.  Your still goin have friends over 18 buyin ciggs for friends under the age limit.  An your still goin have kids with fake ID's buyin ciggs.  It really dont matter.
