She wasn't lip-synching.  I know that sounds hard to believe, but it's true.  When Bands play live, they often have a 'sync track' of some of the music going in the background, that they don't reproduce live on stage, like certain studio effects on drums, extra percussion, little nuances in the rhythm..... they were supposed to play that track, so the band could jam along with it to create the whole song, and the sync-track has all the background vocals on it.  Look @ the band, do they look like singers to you?  These people spend months in the studio trying to get this perfect little pop mix going, with vocals doubled and tripled, so when they play live, they play parts of the studio recording to double and triple the voice.  So, on her backing track for "Pieces of Me" part of the vocal is mixed in.  When they played the second track, they just played the wrong backing track.

I felt pretty bad for her.  She's just a kid, she has 0 to do with what the hell is going on in her 'career'.  Do you think SHE mixed that track? Did SHE play the track?  You think it was her decision to have her voice doubled?  She probably didn't even pick which track she was going to play @ SNL.

So when they fuck it all up with a computer, she's left standing up there for everybody to blame and laugh at, so what does she do? She just dances around and runs off stage crying.

OH, and "My Band Played the Wrong Song"......... means her band played the wrong backing track, which is part of the song....... which is what they did.  She's 100% right, she didn't play the shit, someone in her band (which is engineers, performers, roadies, etc) did.  So, Her "Band played the wrong song" is 100% correct, I don't blame her, I'd blame it on them, too.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

She admitted on MTV.com that the plan was for her to lip synch because her voice was warn down.

As for the backing tracks bull shit. I never liked it. If I want to the track exactly as recorded, I'll listen to the record. When I hear an artist live, I like a little change in the song, so it sounds more real.

So when they fuck it all up with a computer, she's left standing up there for everybody to blame and laugh at, so what does she do? She just dances around and runs off stage crying.

Although she'd initially blamed her band, Ashlee Simpson took full responsibility Sunday for her lip-synching snafu on "Saturday Night Live," saying that her voice was ragged from too much work.

"I can't cancel something like 'SNL,' " she said in a post to her official Web site. "You and I know that even if I synched on it or not, I'd still get seen by millions, maybe even make a few more fans. I'll hold my head high and say I think it was silly of me to do it, silly of me to blame the band, I was just so f---ing embarrassed. But I don't think it did me much harm, and people will see that soon."

Though Simpson's first performance in the show — her hit "Pieces of Me" — went off without a hitch, the second, "Autobiography," was derailed when a pre-recorded track of her voice (singing "Pieces of Me") began playing while Simpson was holding her mic to the side and had her mouth closed. When the track came on, Simpson tried to dance a little jig instead, but after about 30 seconds, she exited the stage as her band continued performing. The show cut to a commercial.

At the end of the show, host Jude Law tried to help Simpson brush the moment aside by shrugging, "What can I say, folks? Live TV." For her part, Simpson initially placed the blame on her band. "I feel so bad," she told the audience. "My band started playing the wrong song. And I didn't know what to do, so I thought I'd do a hoe-down. I'm sorry. It's live TV. Things happen. I'm sorry."

An "SNL" spokesperson said that Simpson had planned to use a backing track, a common concert aid that allows singers to either lip-synch or sing along with a guide-vocal track, to augment her voice. A statement from Simpson's record label blamed a "computer glitch" that triggered "a cut from her album" to play instead of a drum cue.

In fact, Simpson had rehearsed the song live on Thursday (see "Ashlee Simpson Preparing To Take On Tara Reid").

Simpson has since been widely attacked for the snafu, with an interview she gave to Lucky magazine coming back to haunt her. When asked what her take on lip-synching was, she had told the magazine, "I'm totally against it and offended by it. I'm going to let my real talent show, not just stand there and dance around. Personally, I'd never lip-synch. It's just not me."

Simpson's official Web site has been flooded with more than 10,000 posts, many of them negative. In response to the criticism, Simpson defended herself by blaming her hectic work schedule for wearing down her voice. In a post titled, "I'm trying!" she wrote, "Seriously, I don't sleep much for a start, and with flying from A to B and flying all over the f---ing place, it's just getting to me. And it showed. Joke is on me, you seem to enjoy it." In response to her Lucky magazine quote, she posted, "I know what I said, but when I get as worn out and beaten down as I do, sometimes I do not have the energy or the voice left. I have almost lost it due to nonstop moving about. So it is the only option."

Simpson has performed live on television on previous occasions, including MTV News' pre-show to the Video Music Awards, "By the Shore," and the Teen Choice Awards. She's expected to perform live on Monday (October 25), for the Radio Music Awards in Las Vegas, which are to be broadcast on NBC at 9 p.m.

Ashlee's Dad Blames Acid Reflux
« Reply #29 on: October 25, 2004, 06:39:33 PM »
NEW YORK -- If Ashlee Simpson's stomach was upset Saturday night, imagine how she's feeling now.

Busted for a "Saturday Night Live" lip-synch gone awry, her manager-father said Monday his 19-year-old daughter used the extra help because acid reflux disease had made her voice hoarse.

"Just like any artist in America, she has a backing track that she pushes so you don't have to hear her croak through a song on national television," Joe Simpson told Ryan Seacrest on Los Angeles radio station KIIS-FM. "No one wants to hear that."

He insisted it would be Ashlee's live voice alone during her appearance on NBC's "Radio Music Awards" Monday night.

And he said she's never used the extra help onstage before.

"The whole situation was a bummer," Ashlee Simpson said in an interview on MTV's "Total Request Live."

Simpson had performed her hit single "Pieces of Me" without incident earlier on "SNL." When she came back a second time, her band started playing and the first lines of her singing "Pieces of Me" could be heard again.

She was holding her microphone at her waist at the time. Simpson looked momentarily confused as the band plowed ahead with the song and the vocal was quickly silenced.

A flustered Simpson made some exaggerated hopping dance moves, then walked off the stage.

She told "TRL" that she and her band didn't know what to do. "I think all of us went into a state of shock," she said.

The incident exposed what many consider an obvious secret: that some singers who appear onstage aren't singing live at all, or at least have their voices augmented by backing tracks. And it's happened before on "Saturday Night Live," too, executive producer Lorne Michaels told the Associated Press.

"She was mortified and in her dressing room, but (producer) Marci (Klein) got her to come out for goodnights and explained that it wasn't the end of the world. It wasn't her fault," Michaels told AP Radio.

"Every artist that I know in this business has had vocal problems at some time - from Celine on down," said Joe Simpson, also father of Jessica Simpson. "So you've got to do what you've got to do."

He said it was his decision to use the tapes when it became apparent that acid reflux disease had swollen Ashlee's vocal cords. After consulting Wayne Newton's doctor, she received a cortisone shot to get her ready for the "Radio Music Awards," he said.

It was the band's drummer who pushed the wrong button onstage, he said.

Michaels corroborated that, adding: "If she were a more seasoned performer then I think that she would've taken charge and said, 'No, let's start this over again."'

To add to Ashlee's indignity Monday, eBay.com was auctioning off her private cell phone number, which it said had been inadvertently, and briefly, posted on her Web site.
