Holidaymakers who were staying in cottages in Telemark, Norway, felt threatened as the two men started running around naked carrying an axe, according to NRK.

Norway: Government subsidizes Witches magical shop with taxpayer money
« Reply #1 on: November 22, 2004, 09:32:43 PM »
OSLO (Reuters) - A witch has won subsidies from the Norwegian state to run a business of potions, fortune-telling and magic.
Lena Skarning, 33, won the unprecedented start-up grant of 53,000 crowns ($7,400) after promising not to try out harmful spells with her business, Forest Witch Magic Consulting.

Skarning, who owns a white cat and says she has been practicing witchcraft for 13 years, said the runaway success of JK Rowling's Harry Potter books about a boy wizard may have made society more tolerant of sorcery.

"But Harry Potter is a fairy tale and I'm not," she told Reuters Tuesday. "I'm the real thing. And now I'm Norway's only state-backed witch."

She said the government subsidy would help her tell fortunes from Tarot cards, teach magic tricks at corporate seminars and develop products like magical bath oil, water potions or face creams meant to help users have clearer dreams at night.

"The ingredients are mostly herbs -- nothing scary," she said of her products.

Skarning said Harry Potter was unrealistic. "He rides his broom backwards. Real witches ride with the brush part in front," she said.

'Nazi weddings and baptisms' offered in Norway
« Reply #3 on: November 22, 2004, 09:35:35 PM »
A Norwegian group is offering members alternative weddings, baptisms and confirmations using Nazi and Norse symbols.

The rituals are not illegal in Norway.

Vigrid is described as a Nordic religious society and its leader Tore W Tvedt calls himself a Norse priest.

It is reported not to be registered as a religious community and is open to members "of all Nordic ethnic origins".

Aftenpost, quoting the Drammens Tidende and Verdens Gang newspapers, reports Mr Tvedt says his ceremonies are based on a combination of Nordic history and old epics.

The paper says he recently "married" a couple in Lier near Drammen and two weeks ago a young boy was "baptised".

Pictures showed Mr Tvedt holding an implement from Norse mythology called a "torshammer" which is a cross between a crucifix and a hammer. The child was held between ice and fire and Nazi flags were hung on the walls.

The group also runs what Mr Tvedt calls "confirmation instruction" for children on the internet. Required reading includes Nazi literature, including works denying the Holocaust, and his own writings.

He denies it is Nazi propaganda.

That's one fucked up country.

Most hip-hop is now keyboard driven, because the majority of hip-hop workstations have loops and patches that enable somebody with marginal skills to put tracks together,...

Unfortunately, most hip-hop artists gravitated towards the path of least resistance by relying on these pre-set patches. As a result, electric guitar and real musicians became devalued, and a lot of hip-hop now sounds the same.

Bust of the painter Edvard Munch stolen

A bust of the famous Norwegian painter Edvard Munch has been stolen from Our Saviour's Cemetery in Oslo.

The bust was mounted on a stone monument in the Memorial Section.

It is a bit uncertain when the bust was stolen, but it was brought to the attention of the police on Thursday, NRK reports.

The bust was made by the Norwegian sculptor Arne Durvan and was donated by the Friends of the Munch Museum and unveiled in 1992.

Norway child porn raids net 150
« Reply #7 on: November 22, 2004, 09:39:06 PM »
OSLO, Norway -- More than 150 members of an alleged paedophile network have been arrested in raids across Norway.

The raids, carried out by Norway's National Crime Police, also seized video tapes, photographs and computer material showing sexual abuse of children.

Police feared some suspects could also have sexually abused children and said more arrests could be made once the seized material had been analysed.

Norwegian police said the arrests could turn out to be the tip of a larger international paedophile network and will continue investigations, the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten reported.

Police said that 90 of those charged on Thursday admitted in questioning to possessing child pornography.

A police statement said: "Large quantities of child pornography material have been seized in what was the largest such coordinated action in the country."

Possession of child pornography can carry a two-year jail sentence in Norway, The Associated Press reported.

UK parliamentary clerk charged
In a separate move a senior office clerk at the UK's House of Commons has been charged with making indecent images of children, Scotland Yard has confirmed.

Philip Lyon, 37, from Basildon, Essex, was charged with 10 counts of making indecent images of children the UK's Press Association said.

Lyon's main duties are arranging Prime Minister's Question Time for Tony Blair on Wednesday afternoons.

Norway 'rife with racism'
« Reply #8 on: November 22, 2004, 09:40:45 PM »
By the BBC's Lars Bevanger
Norwegians have a long way to go to rid themselves of racist thoughts and ideas, according to the author of a new book on multi-cultural Norway.

Marianne Gullestad, of the Institute for Social Research, in Oslo, was speaking after two Norwegian neo-Nazis were jailed for killing 15-year-old Benjamin Hermansen, whose father was Ghanaian.

There are employers who simply don't invite people to interviews if they, for instance, have Arab-sounding names

Editor Tor Bach
The killing sparked large anti-racism demonstrations, but Ms Gullestad says it did not turn out to be the beginning of real soul-searching in Norwegian society.

She says many still view non-white immigrants as people with few resources who need help.

"The demonstrations indicated that official Norway was willing to rethink its attitudes to racism, but all that quickly ended," she says.

Her book, Norway Seen Through New Eyes, examines the changes Norwegians face in today's multicultural society.

Surprising resistance

Last year, Norway had a fierce debate on the use of the word "negro".

A high-profile black Norwegian athlete said he wished people would stop using the term, which to him was offensive and racist.

"I was very surprised at how much resistance his comments were met with," Ms Gullestad says.

"There are between 150 and 200 self-declared racists in Norway - everyone else say they are not.

A tiny minority in Norway would call themselves racist

"Those who publicly refused to stop using the term 'negro' were all kinds of people, none of whom would consider themselves racist.

"We still have a long way to go to get rid of racist thoughts and ideas which - more or less - everybody is guilty of using in this country."

Tor Bach, editor of the Oslo-based anti-racist magazine Monitor, says Norwegians from ethnic minorities encounter racism at all levels of society.

"It is virtually impossible for a young Somali to secure his own accommodation in Norway at the moment," he says.

Lack of reaction

Those with an immigrant job also face difficulties finding work.

"There are employers who simply don't invite people to interviews if they, for instance, have Arab-sounding names. I know people who have changed their names because of this," says Mr Bach.

Although Benjamin's death caused widespread outrage, commentators who work closely with immigrants and non-white people in Norway, say there is a lack of public reaction to every-day injustices.

With the conviction of Benjamin Hermansen's killers, a painful period for many in Norway comes to a close.

But as Norwegian society becomes increasingly multi-cultural, the issues of racism and lack of social inclusion will not go away.

Norway: Muslim soccer players threatened to decapitate and rape fans
« Reply #11 on: November 22, 2004, 09:45:47 PM »
The audience got more than they bargained for when they attended Sunday’s game between Djerv 2 and Hetlevik at Askøy outside Bergen.
Several of the Djerv 2 players acted aggressively towards both other players and the audience. According to the local paper Bergensavisen, one person was injured after being knocked to the ground by a Djerv player.

Violent threats

The sudden outburst of rage was also directed against several audience members, several received death threats and several were threatened with decapitation. Some of the women in the audience were threatened with rape.

The police had to be called to calm people down.

Neither the players nor the leaders want to comment the incident, but it has been reported to the police.

Section leader Roald Bruun-Hanssen said to the paper that it is not the first time this year that Djerv 2 has been in the media because of negative behavior. Earlier this year, a keeper from the team attacked a referee. He was later refused to play soccer for the rest of the year....

However, he does not want to condemn the entire team which mainly consist of immigrants.

«Most of the people on the team are there to get a positive experience and to play soccer,» Bruun-Hanssen said. «Now Djerv has to present its view of the case, and then we have to evaluate possible sanctions against players and the club afterwards. But at the same time as it is important to send a clear message, we are also forced to try to aid Djerv as a club so that they can incorporate persons with multicultural background into the club in the most sensible way.»

Norway: Mystery drunk bothers Bergen
« Reply #12 on: November 22, 2004, 09:48:48 PM »
Bergen police have given up releasing an inebriated Finn who had to be hauled in three times over the weekend for offensive behavior and non-stop drinking.

Police decided to keep the large Finn in custody after he gave them two different identities and they were unable to determine who he really is, newspaper Bergens Tidende reports.

After being incarcerated for excessive drunkenness on Friday, the man was released with a warning after a night's sleep in jail. He proceeded with another binge on Saturday and was arrested three hours after his release with a blood alcohol level of 2.8 per thousand, where many people lose consciousness and bladder control.

After another nap and warning the man was found harassing people on the Bergen funicular and arrested again, where he will stay until police can determine who he is and how many drunken offenses he may have to his credit.

Police said they were seeking assistance from Finnish authorities and were also checking the mystery man against numerous local complaints of a loud drunk urinating on houses and being offensive to passersby.

Bergen police also reported an overflowing drunk tank over the weekend, with roughly three times the normal number of offenders.

"The Christmas party season is in full swing. We notice that," head of police operations Svein Bruarøy told the newspaper.

Norway: Drove drunk to driving test
« Reply #13 on: November 22, 2004, 09:49:39 PM »
A 50-year-old man taking a written exam to expand his drivers license to include trucking had his car confiscated after turning up for the test drunk. The man did manage to complete the examination before local law enforcement arrived, newspaper Hordaland reports.
"I noticed that there was a suspicious smell of alcohol coming from where he sat. I wanted to investigate and so chose to notify the local police," said Hogne Skjervheim at the Public Roads Administration.

The man finished his exam just in time for another test, this time from a police breathalyzer.

"The light went red as soon as he blew," said officer Ivar Hellene.

The man had driven roughly an hour in this condition, so police also took a blood test and confiscated his car, leaving him to take the bus home.

A conviction for drunk driving will overrule the test result even if the man managed to pass the theoretical exam while intoxicated. He would then lose his driving license and have to begin over again.
