Amica determined to avoid third defeat
Monday, 22 November 2004
KS Amica Wronki will be hoping that lightning does not strike twice in their home group games in the competition.

Resilience required
Their home 5-0 defeat to Rangers FC was the biggest losing margin in the first round of group matches, and came after the Polish club had shown considerable resilience in winning through to the group stage. Their progress was gained with a penalty shoot-out win in the second qualifying round against Budapest Honvéd FC, and a single goal success in the first round proper against Latvian side FK Ventspils. After the Rangers setback, Amica Wronki were then beaten 3-1 at Grazer AK in their second group match, but wins in their last two games can restore their qualification hopes for the knock-out stages.

Second meeting
The match will provide Amica with their first match against Dutch opposition since losing 4-1 on aggregate to SC Heerenveen in the first round of the 1998/99 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. AZ Alkmaar, who were 1980/81 UEFA Cup runners-up to Ipswich Town FC, are in their first season of UEFA club competitions since the 1982/83 season, and this will be their first meeting against a Polish club. After being exempt in the first round of group games, the Dutch club won their opening group game against AJ Auxerre by 2-0 with two goals inside the first 20 minutes from Stein Huysegems.

Welcome return
AZ have only lost five of 29 previous games in the competitions and have made a fine return to UEFA club competitions this season. In the first round AZ beat UEFA Champions League representatives FC PAOK Thessaloniki of Greece in both legs, winning 3-2 in Greece and then securing their place in the group stages with a 2-1 return leg success at Alkmaar. In both matches AZ recovered from a goal down.
