In some ways we already are overpopulated.  For example, while many people don't realize it, we are already depleting global clean water supplies.  Every year that goes by we have less clean drinking water in the ecosystem because we consume more than the ecosystem naturally replenishes.

For more on the problem of over population the The Population Bomb by Paul Ehrlich is one of the more well known books on the subject...
