Your Favorite Web Tools
« on: December 12, 2004, 04:44:01 PM »
Hopefully this will be a helpful post, but I have somewhat of a personal fascination with the Internet, and the various tools it has created that give us all easy access to information.  So I figured I'd list some of the sites I use regularly and find helpful, and everyone else can add to the list.  Anyways in no important order:

1.  google.com - easily my favorite site, and obviously everyone knows google already, but there are a lot of cool google functions most people don't know about for example:

-  Google Suggest http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=1&hl=en  definitely worth checking out and make google a whole lot more useful
-  Google Labs http://labs.google.com/ lets you try out new ideas google is working on

2.  Wikipedia - is a a free, multilingual encylopedia that anyone can contribute to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

3.  Feed Demon - is my favorite RSS reader http://www.bradsoft.com/feeddemon/index.asp

4.  Wurld Book - lets you save and share your bookmarks so they are accessible from anywhere http://www.wurldbook.com/info/

5.  Sourceforge - is the best place to go for open-source software  http://sourceforge.net/

6.  Firefox - the best web browser available.  if your still using IE you should definitely switch.  http://www.mozilla.org/

7.  Thunderbird - a pretty cool e-mail client, definitely far superior to outlook.   http://www.mozilla.org/

8.  Slashdot - the best place to keep up on techie trends http://slashdot.org/

For music I use:

1.  Emule - is the best software for p2p filesharing.  DL times are based on how much everyone shares, so there is a ton of stuff on the network, and its open-source so its spyware free, relatively bug-free, and constantly developing  http://www.emule-project.net/home/perl/general.cgi?l=1

2.  Azureus - is a cool open-source bittorent client http://azureus.sourceforge.net/

3.  Supernova -one you DL and install azureus, suprnova is the place to go for torrents.  w/o azureus you cant get anything from suprnova tho.  http://suprnova.org/

Ok so I dont know how helpful all this stuff will be, and there is prolly more I can add to the list, but post your own fav. internet tools.

MSN - Chat
eMule - Download of Scrubs/Joey/etc Episodes
mIRC - Download of Rap Albums
Bittorent - Download of Movies
KaZaA - Download of Spyware
FireFox - Browsing
Gmail - email Account for Gz
Cause I don't care where I belong no more
What we share or not I will ignore
And I won't waste my time fitting in
Cause I don't think contrast is a sin
No, it's not a sin

I think the world (or at least my part of the world, the U.S.) is about to change in a drastic way with the advent of computers.  Accessing knowledge has never been as easy as it is now.  While it doesn't help problem solving skills per se, the internet has eliminated any problems with just basic plain knowledge and factual data... anytime I want to know something, I just make a mental note, and look it up online that night.  Hell, i'm already smarter for it, imagine how intelligent kids are going to be growing up with computers, just looking up any information they're not sure of the answers, or anything they've wondered about, and immediately knowing all there is to know about it, via the internet.

On the other hand, I think it's going to have huge implications that may be negative, as well.  Maybe this influx of data-based knowledge will hinder other skills, social skills necessary to find answers in the real world, or maybe the vast amount of data-based knowledge will clash with minds with lesser problem-solving skills.  It's gonna be a wild ride, it's fascinating.

if you use google a lot, like myself, you might want to check out the book Google Hacks by O'Reilly publishing.  Its about a year old, and a lot changes at google on a monthly basis it seems, but it goes over some of the more advanced features available on google, and gives you some tips for more effective searching.

Another book I haven't read:  How to Do Everything With Google

Google's help page is fairly useful too:
