In U.S., 44 Percent Say Restrict Muslims

1 hour, 37 minutes ago

By WILLIAM KATES, Associated Press Writer

ITHACA, N.Y. - Nearly half of all Americans believe the U.S. government should restrict the civil liberties of Muslim Americans, according to a nationwide poll.

The survey conducted by Cornell University also found that Republicans and people who described themselves as highly religious were more apt to support curtailing Muslims' civil liberties than Democrats or people who are less religious.

Researchers also found that respondents who paid more attention to television news were more likely to fear terrorist attacks and support limiting the rights of Muslim Americans.

"It's sad news. It's disturbing news. But it's not unpredictable," said Mahdi Bray, executive director of the Muslim American Society. "The nation is at war, even if it's not a traditional war. We just have to remain vigilant and continue to interface."

The survey found 44 percent favored at least some restrictions on the civil liberties of Muslim Americans. Forty-eight percent said liberties should not be restricted in any way.

The survey showed that 27 percent of respondents supported requiring all Muslim Americans to register where they lived with the federal government. Twenty-two percent favored racial profiling to identify potential terrorist threats. And 29 percent thought undercover agents should infiltrate Muslim civic and volunteer organizations to keep tabs on their activities and fund-raising.

Cornell student researchers questioned 715 people in the nationwide telephone poll conducted this fall. The margin of error was 3.6 percentage points.

James Shanahan, an associate professor of communications who helped organize the survey, said the results indicate "the need for continued dialogue about issues of civil liberties" in a time of war.

While researchers said they were not surprised by the overall level of support for curtailing civil liberties, they were startled by the correlation with religion and exposure to television news.

"We need to explore why these two very important channels of discourse may nurture fear rather than understanding," Shanahan said.
According to the survey, 37 percent believe a terrorist attack in the United States is still likely within the next 12 months. In a similar poll conducted by Cornell in November 2002, that number stood at 90 percent.

Props to Sikotic for having sympathy and posting this article.

I've been Muslim since about the time W. Bush was first inagurated into office, still, I've never faced any prejudice, and I even wear a thobe and a kufi a lot of the time.  Still, that doesn't mean that many brothers and sisters in this country aren't feeling the heat.

The worst incident inside America, has been the treatment of Imam Jamil Abdulllah Al-Amin of Atlanta, Georgia.  Federal agents have been after him ever since he was a 1960's revolutionary during the civil rights era.  They've framed him for a crime he is innocent of, and they have even silenced him in prison because he is such a popular figure amongst black prisoners, that many became close followers of him.  Nobody can even visit him in prison now except his wife, through a glass window.  They've totally isolated him.

Most the victims though are foreigners.  They usually leave the African American Muslims alone.  There was one case of this white Muslim guy being acused of being involved in subversive activities in Spain, but he's a lawyer and he proved that he's never even been to Spain, nor does he know anyone there, nor has he ever sent money to anybody that lives there.  He was cleared of all charges.

People need to stop watching the news and start understanding that the media and government manipulate people through fear.  Bush used a fear campaign every step of the way to get back in the white house.  He has a great interest in keeping the public in fear, without it, he is nothing.

So true. It's just plain foolish and simple minded to restrict the rights of Muslim citizens. There is a such thing as the Civil Rights Act and any restriction to anyone of race, religion, gender, etc. is illegal. So continue to dream ignorantly people.

How can this be, Land Of The Free,  Home Of The Brave?
Cause I don't care where I belong no more
What we share or not I will ignore
And I won't waste my time fitting in
Cause I don't think contrast is a sin
No, it's not a sin

Man PLEASE, stop disrespecting the United States everytimes, you look paranoid.

"Unity and right and freedom for the German fatherland;
Let us all pursue this purpose brotherly, with heart and hand.
Unity and right and freedom are the pledge of happiness.
Flourish in this blessing's glory, flourish, German fatherland."

This is your National Anthem. And you are the same ones of Nazism, Hitler and Holocaust.

Unity.  ::)
Right.  ;D (Nazi's..)
Freedom.  :-X (ask half of Europe about it..)

With heart and hand.  ;D (maybe just with hands..)

What if somebody says it to you?

I bet in 50 years the whole population of Germany went from Nazism to Love & Happiness. Congratulations. :-*

Yup; talk shit about us and our history all the time, but the same time we were locking up the Japanese, you were gassing the Jews, so you have no legs to stand on.  Plus, you invented porn where people eat each other's shit.  Come on man.
